This year, the Labor Day sales are especially beneficial for shoppers. Retailers are struggling with how to cover higher costs.tariffs, and experts I spoke with indicate that many will probably increase prices on consumer goods in the fall. This suggests that Labor Day could be your final opportunity to purchase items at their pre-tariff prices, according to Carls.

Experts claim the top Labor Day sales focus on three areas, which I have outlined below along with examples of current discounts. All products I suggest are discounted by at least 20% and have excellent reviews.
Summer clearance
Merchants aim to eliminate as much summer clothing, outdoor gear, and garden furniture as possible,gardening suppliesand grills as much as possible to create space for autumn and winter stock, says Vipin Porwal, CEO and consumer savings expert atSmartyThey remove inventory during Labor Day by providing significant reductions on all items associated with the warm season. - Fall fashion: Avoid purchasing winter clothing such as coats,bootsand jeans until late September and October, notes Porwal. Prices are at their peak currently as the season is just beginning, and they are expected to remain high for several more weeks.
- Toys and video games: The top deals of the year for toys andvideo gamesoccur around Black Friday and throughout December since individuals frequently purchase these items as presents, according to Porwal.
Are import taxes affecting Labor Day sales?
Indeed, tariffs are affecting Labor Day sales. “Last year, certain categories saw declines of 30 to 40%, but this year, many are stabilizing around 20 to 25%,” explains Carls. This implies you may need to adjust your savings approach to compensate for reduced discounts. Porwal suggests focusing more on combining savings opportunities, which involves using retailers’ offers along with extra coupons and promo codes, signing up for cash back and loyalty programs, and using credit cards that provide points or cash back while shopping. “It’s not about one major discount, but rather accumulating smaller gains,” notes Carls.
Although tariffs might be leading retailers to provide less aggressive Labor Day discounts than in previous years, the sales are still definitely worth taking advantage of. In addition to the tariffs that are already in effect, there’s anew roundscheduled to take effect on August 29. These extra charges will add more financial pressure on retailers, many of whom have already been covering expenses since early this year to maintain stable prices for consumers. According to Carls, brands might now need to increase prices this fall, particularly as they replenish their warehouses for the holiday period and need to import goods. Overall, Labor Day could be your final opportunity to “tariff-proof” your purchases, or buy items before expected price hikes, says Porwal.
How to reduce expenses when shopping during the Labor Day sale
- Enter with a strategyCreate a list of all the items you plan to purchase in advance. Have your list easily accessible while you shop, allowing you to regularly review it to stay focused and prevent unplanned buys.
- Set a budgetBefore you start browsing or enter a store, set a specific budget that you won’t exceed. “Labor Day is the kind of sale where one throw pillow can quickly turn into an entire living room,” says Carls.
- Stack savings: Focus on shopping at stores that offer cash back opportunities, and think about using credit cards that provide points or cash back. Pairing these rewards with the retailers’ real discounts, coupons, and promo codes can lead to greater savings.
- Compare prices: Nearly all brands and retailers offer Labor Day sales, so check prices (and shipping costs if you’re buying online) to determine which one has the lowest rates. Porwal mentions that comparing prices is most beneficial when most retailers’ Labor Day promotions are available, which should be by Friday, August 29.
- Register for newsletters and text message lists from brandsBusinesses inform customers about new price reductions, time-sensitive offers, special discount codes, and early access to sales via email subscriptions and text message services, along with their social media channels.
- Use store-wide discountsIf you’re shopping at a department or large retail store, you probably have items from various categories in your cart. Some stores provide overall discounts, which can allow you to save on products that may not be on sale by themselves elsewhere, according to Porwal.
- Look for bundles: According to Carls, product bundles are usually offered at a greater discount compared to purchasing each item separately. On Labor Day, you can expect to find appliance packages, such as a washing machine and dryer, as well as technology sets, like a laptop and an external hard drive, among others.
- Get acquainted with return policiesMost merchants do not offer unique return procedures during promotional periods, but it’s wise to confirm. If an item is designated as final sale, the retailer typically states this clearly.

Although online Labor Day sales may not always offer better deals, there are typically more options available to browse than what is found in physical stores. You can also combine promo codes and cash back offers at checkout, which helps reduce the total cost of your purchase, according to Carls. Shopping for sales online is also more convenient, as you can do it from any location, and it’s easier to compare prices between different retailers.
The primary disadvantage of shopping online is the need to wait for your purchase to arrive, along with the potential for shipping delays. Shopping in physical stores removes both these issues—you take your items home immediately, eliminating any waiting time or delays. You can also touch and test products in-store, which is particularly useful when purchasing clothing, shoes, appliances, and furniture, according to Carls. Retailers often have clearance sections that aren’t available online, meaning you might discover a great deal. However, you might find that these advantages don’t compensate for the long lines and busy store environments.
What’s the lesson here? “In-store shopping can be useful if you want to examine a product physically, but when it comes to pricing, you don’t always get a better deal by leaving your home,” explains Carls. For the ideal combination, Porwal suggests using retailers’ online ordering with in-store pickup options.
