Fall Racing Season Heats Up with Major Events Across the Globe
As the leaves begin to change color and the racing scene shifts into early fall mode, several key tracks across North America are gearing up for a series of high-stakes races. Woodbine, Aqueduct, and Churchill Downs are stepping into the spotlight as the late-summer runs at Del Mar and Kentucky Downs come to an end. This weekend promises a mix of thrilling competition, with notable races in both dirt and turf events.
Key Races and Contenders
One of the highlights this weekend is the $1 million (Canadian) Grade I Rogers Woodbine Mile, which offers a “Win and You’re In” spot for the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile. The race features a strong field, including Godolphin’s Notable Speech, who has shown promise despite some inconsistencies. Trained by Charlie Appleby, Notable Speech has a history of success, including wins in the 2,000 Guineas and Group 1 Sussex Stakes. Other contenders include Win for the Money and My Boy Prince, who are part of a powerful duo under trainer Mark Casse.
In the Filly & Mare Turf division, Fionn made a splash in the Dueling Grounds Oaks, capturing the $2 million Grade III event. The Twirling Candy filly, trained by Brad Cox, continues her winning streak with three straight victories. Meanwhile, the All Along at Laurel Park will see seven entries, though none are particularly dominant.
The Turf Sprint division is also set to be competitive, with three major races on Saturday: the Floral Park at Aqueduct and the Laurel Dash and Sensible Lady Turf Dash at Laurel Park. These races are expected to draw large fields and provide exciting matchups.
Distaff and Sprint Action
Saturday’s $400,000 Grade II Fasig-Tipton Locust Grove at Churchill Downs features Royal Spa and Alpine Princess, both of whom have shown potential despite recent challenges. Royal Spa has a strong record under the Twin Spires, while Alpine Princess comes off a third-place finish in the Groupie Doll. At Woodbine, the Ontario Matron will feature Caitlinhergrtness, the 2024 King’s Plate winner, who is more comfortable on the all-weather surface than on turf.
In the Sprint division, the $300,000 Louisville Thoroughbred Society at Churchill Downs boasts a solid field, with Bentornato, the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Sprint runner-up, making his return. Simcoe, who won the Bold Venture Stakes at Woodbine, is the favorite for the Branded Cities Vigil Stakes.
Filly & Mare Sprint and Juvenile Competitions
Positano Sunset returns from a four-month break as the 2-1 favorite in the Open Mind at Churchill Downs. Meanwhile, Comport enters the Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs after a win in the Ellis Park Juvenile, making him a top contender in a largely untested field.
The Juvenile Turf division includes the $500,000 Summer Stakes at Woodbine, which offers a “Win and You’re In” spot for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Godolphin’s Wild Desert is the morning line favorite, trained by Charlie Appleby. In the Juvenile Fillies division, Dazzling Dame is the likely favorite in the Pocahontas Stakes, having won the Sorority Stakes at Monmouth.
The Juvenile Fillies Turf division features the $500,000 Natalma Stakes at Woodbine, with Dance to the Music as the 2-1 favorite. Chad Brown-trained Deep Learning and Dyna are also worth watching.
Global Racing Highlights
Ireland kicks off its racing calendar with the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes, the Group 1 Matron, and the Group 2 Champions Juvenile. Delacroix, a son of Dubawi, is the favorite in the Irish Champion Stakes, while Fallen Angel and January lead the Matron. The Champions Juvenile features multiple O’Brien-trained horses.
At The Curragh, the Group 1 Irish St Leger and other races will take place, showcasing some of Ireland’s top talent. In England, the St Leger, Champagne, and Park Stakes are among the key events, with Coolmore and Aidan O’Brien having strong contenders.
Australia’s racing scene shines with the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington, featuring top horses like Via Sistina and Mr Brightside.
This weekend promises a wealth of action across the globe, with each race offering a chance for glory and advancement toward the Breeders’ Cup. Whether on the dirt, turf, or across international borders, the excitement of fall racing continues to build.
