9 South Shore Fall Events, Plus an Ozzy Osbourne Brewery Tribute

Discover the Magic of Fall on the South Shore

As Labor Day fades into memory and the school year begins, the South Shore is just starting to show its true colors. With cooler temperatures, vibrant foliage, and a range of outdoor activities, September and October offer a unique blend of adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re looking for live music, seasonal festivals, or simply a peaceful walk through nature, the South Shore has something special in store.

Live Music Under the Stars

For those who haven’t yet experienced an outdoor concert this season, the Levitate Backyard Concert Series is still going strong. This intimate event, held at 1871 Ocean St. in Marshfield, features a lineup of local and regional artists across several dates in September and October. Most shows are free, making it an accessible way to enjoy live music in a relaxed setting. Highlights include performances by Mini Yellow Witches, Blue Light Bandits, and Deer Tick with Gymshorts. Visitors can also enjoy food from local vendors and craft drinks while soaking in the crisp fall air.

The Levitate Surf Shop, known for launching the annual Levitate Music & Arts Festival, continues to bring music lovers together with its backyard series. This offshoot offers a more laid-back vibe, perfect for enjoying the final days of summer and the start of fall.

Celebrating Brews and Traditions

Widowmaker Brewing is celebrating its 8th anniversary with a tribute to the Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne. The event, held on Saturday, September 13, from noon to 10 p.m., includes guest taps, giveaways, and live music. A special performance by Blizzard of Ozzy will take place at 6 p.m., offering fans a chance to celebrate the iconic rock legend. Admission is free, and food and beer are available for purchase.

Outdoor beer gardens and Oktoberfest events keep the energy alive as local breweries and taprooms remain busy throughout the fall. From Split Rock in Cohasset to Stellwagen in Marshfield, these spots provide the perfect setting for enjoying a cold drink while taking in the autumn scenery. Many also host special events that add to the festive atmosphere.

Fall Farm Fun

Fall brings a variety of farm traditions that are perfect for families. R & C Farms in Scituate hosts the Pumpkin Drop Festival during Columbus Day weekend, featuring candy-filled pumpkins smashed from cranes, corn mazes, hayrides, and a farm market. Nearby, Sauchuk’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch in Plympton opens on September 13, offering a fun day out for all ages. In October, cranberry bog tours in Carver give visitors a chance to witness the traditional wet harvest.

For a different kind of adventure, Ward’s Berry Farm in Sharon offers a sunflower maze open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. While the maze itself isn’t for picking, there is a separate field where visitors can enjoy picking their own fruits. Tickets are $10 per person, with children under three admitted for free.

Historical Adventures

King Richard’s Faire in Carver is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. This Renaissance village spans 80 wooded acres and features jousting tournaments, stage shows, fire eaters, magicians, and over 100 artisan shops. Food stands serve classic fair fare like turkey legs and craft beverages, and visitors are encouraged to attend in costume. Admission is $46 for adults, $26 for children aged 4–11, and free for kids under four.

Paddle Through Autumn

Fall is the ideal time for paddling, with calmer waters and stunning foliage reflections. The North and South Rivers Watershed Association offers guided kayak adventures, including multi-day trips and ecology-focused programs. For self-guided explorers, their Canoe and Kayak Guide provides detailed information on local waterways.

Even if you’re not a paddler, the beaches themselves remain a draw. Nantasket in Hull, Duxbury Beach, and Plymouth’s Long Beach are all open year-round, with parking fees waived after Labor Day. September often brings the warmest ocean water of the year, averaging between 65 and 69 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a great time for a refreshing swim.

Farmers Markets and Festivals

Farmers markets continue to thrive well into the fall, offering fresh produce, baked goods, and crafts. Hingham’s market runs through the Saturday before Thanksgiving, while Hanover holds monthly markets through November. Braintree caps its season with a special Thanksgiving indoor market. Coastal towns like Cohasset, Scituate, and Plymouth also keep their markets running into late October, providing ample opportunities to support local farmers and artisans.

Whale Watching and More

Whale watching remains a highlight of the fall season on the South Shore. While humpbacks, finbacks, and minkes begin their migration south, early to mid-October can still offer memorable encounters. Captain John Boats departs from 10 Town Wharf in Plymouth through October, with trips running on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. These 3½ to 4-hour tours, led by naturalists, provide a chance to see whales against the backdrop of autumn skies.
