The Troggs

The group responsible for “Wild Thing” was once caught in a heated dispute in the studio, and the popular recording has been referenced as the basis for a scene in the movie where the Tap almost falls apart while recording a guitar solo, according toFar Out Magazine.

Reg Presley, Ronnie Bond, Pete Staples, and Chris Britton established the English beat band, although Britton is the sole member continuing to perform with the group.

Uriah Heep

In the commentary track for the Criterion Edition DVDThis Is Spinal Tap, Shearer noted that the film’s keyboardist, John Sinclair, had just come back from touring with Uriah Heep right when principal photography was about to start.

Sinclair shared with the team that Uriah Heep was scheduled to perform at an Air Force base, and this story later influenced a scene in the movie.

Uriah Heep was first established in 1969 by Mick Box, David Byron, Ken Hensley, Paul Newton, and Alex Napier. While several members of the British rock group have come and gone over time, Box remains the lead guitarist.

Tom Petty

The moment when the band becomes lost behind the stage — spending an endless time moving through complex maintenance tunnels while yelling “Rock and roll!” and “Hello, Cleveland!” — has actually occurred to several bands (includingYes and Bob Dylan).

As per Guest, however, it was directly influenced byTom Petty. In the Criterion edition, he said, “We watched a video of Tom Petty performing somewhere in Germany, where he walks backstage and a door opens, leading him onto an indoor tennis court, and there’s a moment of shock, like, ‘Where am I?’ “

Petty, who was the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, in addition to achieving success as a solo artist, died on Oct. 2, 2017.

Van Halen (and actor Yul Brynner)

Nigel’s minor outburst behind the scenes regarding the sandwich tray the venue offered (“I don’t want it to impact your performance,” their manager begs) seemed to be based onVan Halenhis request that no brown M&Ms be found in the backstage area, as perThe Guardian.

And, surprisingly, actor Yul Brynner also influenced the scene. McKean stated that he had a contract for backstage food items that stipulated, “Under no conditions should white eggs be replaced with brown ones.”

Van Halen was an American rock group established by siblingsEddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen and David Lee Roth and Michael Anthony in the early 1970s.

Saxon

A prominent English heavy metal group, Saxon, might be among the few bands with a member who openly states they inspired a film: Bassist Steve Dawson authored a book titledSaxon, Drugs & Rock ‘n’ Roll: The True Spinal Tap, and Shearer did actually tour with the band before filmingTap.

Saxon was established in 1977 by Biff Byford, Graham Oliver, Paul Quinn, Steve Dawson, and Pete Gill. Byford remains the main singer, and Quinn is still the lead guitarist.
