Examining Hochul’s Mamdani Endorsement: Election Implications Now and Beyond

Following her support for Zohran Mamdani, Governor Kathy Hochul urged President Donald Trump to allow the New York City mayoral race to proceed “fairly, without interference”.

I believe what pushed me over the edge was the conversation about Donald Trump inserting himself into our local election,” Governor Hochul said to reporters at a separate event on Monday. “That’s likely what made me even more determined to collaborate with Mamdani, knowing I could work with someone who would stand up to Donald Trump side by side with me.

CBS6 interviewed political experts on Monday regarding the effect of the endorsement.

Morgan Hook, a partner at Bluejacket Strategies and a Democratic advisor, stated:

Well, I believe that nowadays, endorsements don’t carry much weight. I don’t think many voters are influenced by Kathy Hochul endorsing someone in the New York City Mayor’s race, just as I don’t think Elise Stefanik’s endorsement of Curtis Lee had much effect. I also don’t think Donald Trump’s support for Andrew Cuomo sways many voters. I see this as an inside game. In that context, it might have some influence. There are certain internal party dynamics that come into play with these endorsements, but that’s part of a separate conversation.

Lee Miringoff, Marist Poll, stated:

Politics means nothing if it’s not about timing. I believe you understand that endorsements don’t determine a candidate’s success. However, since Mamdani needs some form of validation… someone from the elected Democratic faction to declare, ‘I’m with you,’ holds more significance than other potential endorsements in the race. And I think that makes sense. He is clearly the leading candidate right now, which means he’s gaining a lot of Democratic support in New York City. If Governor Hochul is considering her own future candidacy, this would be something she could appreciate, a reciprocal gesture. Lieutenant Governor [Delgado] is challenging her and would target her from the progressive side. Mamdani could protect herself from that. He could serve as a buffer. And I think that’s crucial. I believe that’s part of the strategy. In some ways, it might benefit her more than it does Mamdani. In the short term, she might need it. He seems to be in a strong position.

Regarding the effect on Hochul’s 2026 gubernatorial bid…Lee Miringoff, Marist Poll, stated:

We’re in a very blue state. It’s likely that if President Trump were to attack Mayor Mamdani, it wouldn’t hurt the gubernatorial candidate’s support in New York. However, this situation is something that will unfold, and I believe it could provide a short-term advantage for Mamdani. In the long run, it might also affect Hochul’s campaign. We’ll have to see how things develop. We don’t yet know who the nominees will be. For now, her first priority is to get through the primary, and this would be a step in that direction. If Mamdani becomes mayor, he’ll have time to govern, and we’ll see how popular he is and whether he can adjust some of his views to be more widely accepted. But in the short term, for this Governor-Mayor combination, she’ll be running in the Democratic primary for governor, and most of the votes in the Democratic primary come from downstate. This has always been something she’s tried to tap into and use to strengthen her candidacy.

Morgan Hook, a partner at Bluejacket Strategies and a Democratic consultant, stated:

So Kathy Hochul has been indicating, essentially since the time Zoran Mamdani won the primary, that she plans to act as a check on his more progressive policies. What this will entail is still unclear. In many ways, these two have been discussing similar issues for a long time, which is mainly affordability, aiming to make New York more affordable. This has been something Kathy Hochul has emphasized for three years. However, the political dynamics here are somewhat different. Kathy Hochul is the head of the Democratic Party in New York State, and if she wants to maintain her leadership role within the party, it makes sense for her to support the Democratic candidate for the largest city in the state, which represents almost half of the state’s Senate population. It’s less about her adopting those policies or endorsing everything that Zoran Mamdani stands for, and more about being the party leader and striving to create a broad coalition.
