FDA warns of radioactive shrimp as two brands recalled

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated on Sunday that AquaStar (USA) Corp based in Seattle has recalled around 85,000 bags of shrimp items available at major supermarket chains across the country because ofpossible exposure to cesium-137, a radioactive element.

The recall involves Kroger-branded raw and prepared shrimp items, along with AquaStar raw shrimp skewers, sold in 31 states from June 2025 to September 2025.

The FDA stated that no cases of illness have been reported so far, although the contamination could present possible long-term cancer dangers due to ongoing exposure.

Why It Matters

This recent recall represents the second significant case of radioactive shrimp contamination within a month, pointing to ongoing problems with the same Indonesian vendor.

In August, the FDA issued a warning to consumers regarding cesium-137.contamination found in Great Value shrimp items available at Walmart, also linked to PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods) in Indonesia. The quick series of recalls from the same location brings up significant concerns about global food safety monitoring and the efficiency of existing inspection procedures.

Both events feature the same radioactive isotope, which the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) cautions that it can lead to DNA damage and raise cancer risks with repeated exposure.

What Is Cesium-137?

Cesium-137 is generated through nuclear fission and is utilized in medical equipment and gauges, as stated by the CDC.

It is utilized in small quantities for calibrating radiation detection instruments. When used in larger volumes, it can be employed in medical radiation therapy machines to treat cancer, for medical sterilization, and in industrial gauges that monitor the flow of liquids through pipes and other industrial applications, as stated by the CDC.

External exposure, on the other hand, may result in burns, acute radiation sickness, and fatalities, according to the CDC.

“Being exposed to Cs-137 can raise the chances of developing cancer due to the high-energy gamma rays it emits. When Cs-137 is ingested or inhaled, it spreads throughout the soft tissues, particularly muscle tissue, exposing these areas to both beta particles and gamma radiation, which increases the risk of cancer,” the agency states.

Potential Cesium-137 contamination was identified in cargo containers at ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, and Savannah, Georgia, through standard inspections.
