Staccato 2011 (previously known as STI) launched the CS for 2023, and after firing a total of 2,500 to 3,000 rounds through two of them, I’m convinced. I’ve found them to be highly dependable with all kinds of ammunition—from 115-grain full metal jackets to 147-grain hollow points. They are easy to handle and very precise. Approximately the size of a Glock 19, but slightly more narrow, the Staccato CS is a compact version of the 2011 pistol. It features several notable differences compared to larger 2011 models and 2011-style pistols such as the Staccato P and Springfield 1911 DS Prodigy. The grip and frame are smaller, and the CS incorporates a redesigned magazine that resembles the shape and size of the Sig P365’s magazines. It still retains the 1911’s controls and trigger, but the recoil mechanism has been updated to a dual guide rod system, making the CS the most stable-shooting compact 9mm pistol I have tested.

The Staccato CS is a costly firearm, and the limited availability has led to some being sold at extremely high prices. Purchased directly from Staccato, the pistol comes with a price tag of $2,500, but we’ve observed the clear advantages you receive for your investment—both in terms of craftsmanship and accuracy.

Glock G19

The 19th model from Glock, known as the Glock G19, is among the most widely used and efficient concealed carry firearms globally. Glock was a pioneer in this field and remains a dominant force in the realm of polymer-frame, striker-fired pistols, and theG19 is among numerous effective Glock firearms.. It is among the first compact 9mm polymer pistols, and remains one of the top choices for concealed carry today. You can also obtain a 1-to-1 training replica for the G19, chambered in .22 LR — theGlock G44.

The elegance of the Glock G19 lies in its straightforward design. Let’s be honest, it isn’t beautiful in any other sense. However, the G19 is efficient. It’s quite easy to hide, simple to fire, and very user-friendly. Glock has established a reputation for dependability over the years, and the G19 has remained among the top choices since the late 80s. Very few pistols of similar size have matched its 15+1 round capacity, and it can be found in nearly every firearms store.

Although their motto is “perfection,” there are several modifications that shooters often make to their Glock G19s. The factory sights need to be replaced right away. Actually, they aren’t bad, but they could be significantly improved, and there is a whole market of aftermarket Glock-compatible components, sights, and accessories that has developed alongside the G19. Companies such as Shadow Systems and Palmetto State Armory even provideG19 clone pistols. If you obtain the Gen 5 MOS edition of the G19, you’ll notice improvements to the grip, an ambidextrous slide stop, and a slide that is compatible with optics. Ruger RXM

In the fiercely competitive market for Glock clones, the RXM, developed through a partnership between Ruger and Magpull, surprised many. It is a replica of Glock’s famous G19 Gen 3, yet it comes several hundred dollars less. It can be purchased for $400, or occasionally even less.

From the outside, the RXM features modifications that many shooters have chosen to pay for separately. It includes a well-shaped slide with appealing and practical slanted front and back slide serrations, and it’s designed to accommodate an optic. Instead of Glock’s MOS plate system, the RXM can be customized to fit various optic footprints such as Delta Point Pro, RMR, and RMSc, using pins that can be added to suit specific optics. This setup enables a low-mounted optic along with co-witnessed iron sights.

Magpul’s involvement in the partnership is the interchangeable grip component. Unlike Glocks or other Glock imitations, this component contains a detachable fire control unit or frame. The grips are designed with excellent ergonomics and a textured surface for better grip. In essence, these are similar to what many shooters have been modifying their original Glocks into for years. Even more beneficial is the fact that the removable frame design remains compatible with third-party Gen 3 Glock trigger components, enabling additional enhancements.

On the range, this firearm performed just as effectively as any pistol we’ve encountered at this price, with some members of our annual gun test team favoring it over a standard Glock. It is accurate, easy to handle, and features a notably gentle recoil. We believe there’s currently no superior value for a concealed carry weapon than the RXM.

Springfield Armory Hellcat Pro OSP

Similar to many of its competitors, the Springfield Hellcat Pro aims to achieve an ideal balance between being easy to conceal and having sufficient magazine capacity. It performs well in this aspect. It is slightly smaller than a Glock 19 and slightly larger than the Micro-9s, but offers a 15+1 capacity with magazines that sit flush. It is also more compact than a G19 and features low-profile controls for a snag-free carry.

Similar to other Springfield pistols, it is equipped with a comprehensive set of features. It includes a reversible magazine catch, a loaded-chamber indicator on the top of the slide, comes with two reliable magazines, features a durable Melonite coating, has an extensive accessory rail, and includes grip serrations on both the front and back of the slide.

The Hellcat Pro OSP stands out in the sub-compact category and is a dependable option among top concealed carry firearms. While the muzzle rise isn’t severe, the Hellcat models typically experience a bit more snap in recoil compared to other guns of similar size, yet they remain manageable to shoot. They excel at fitting a significant amount of ammunition into a slim, compact design.

Sig Sauer P365 XMacro Tacops

Sig Sauer has been active in recent years, creating numerous versions of their leading models. The Sig Sauer P365 XMacro Tacops is the second version of theP365 XMacro, which is a larger version of the micro-compact P365 that includes a compensator-cut slide. If the XMacro Tacops seems somewhat redundant, it is, but it remains one of the top compact concealed carry pistols available today. It is exceptionally slim and offers the highest capacity in its category.

The primary distinction between the Tacops and the standard XMacro is a minor simplification. The Tacops maintains the same overall dimensions, but it has a longer barrel since it does not include an integrated slide compensator. The XMacro Tacops also includes a small magwell that is functional, yet not intrusive. When compared to the smaller standard P365, the XMacro Tacops offers a larger grip and a longer slide. The 17-round magazines are identical and compatible with the P365, although they are slightly longer. The XMacro Tacops has a similar size to the Glock G19 and Staccato CS, but it is more comfortable for concealed carry due to its thinner profile.

I’ve fired approximately 1,800 rounds through these two pistols, and aside from a few feeding issues during the initial 100-round break-in phase, they have performed exceptionally well. The P365 XMacro Tacops is a very smooth-shooting pistol that points naturally. The trigger isn’t too heavy, but it doesn’t have a distinct stop. During our 2023 gun test, we conducted high-speed video analysis of rapid fire sequences between the Tacops and the ported XMacro, and discovered that the more budget-friendly Tacops exhibited only slightly more muzzle rise. H&K CC9

In early 2025, H&K introduced their brand-new CC9. This is a handgun crafted specifically to satisfy the needs of American shooters seeking an EDC pistol. The CC9 is a well-designed micro-compact 9mm that comes with both 10- and 12-round magazines. It’s not attention-seeking or overly showy, and that’s precisely what we appreciate. We recently evaluated the CC9 during our annual firearms test at Gunsite Academy, and every member of the testing team praised the pistol’s comfortable grip and understated design features.

The CC9’s frame features a textured, non-slip surface in key areas, with no sharp edges or rough spots on the firearm. The slide is smoothly curved yet provides solid grip through its front and rear serrations. It includes low-profile dovetail-mounted night sights and is designed to accommodate an RMSc- or 407k-style red dot optic. When equipped with a low-profile red dot, it remains easy to conceal and quick to aim. It performs well when handled with both hands or one hand and is suitable for left-handed users due to its low-profile slide stop levers and magazine catch buttons.

Many micro-compact 9mm handguns tend to be difficult to manage due to their compact design and lightweight, short slides. However, the CC9 proved to be very manageable, allowing for quick and precise shot placement. We were even able to hit steel plates of vital size from 50 yards. Even those on the test team who were initially doubtful became convinced they might need a new CC9 for themselves.

Walther PDP-F 3.5-Inch

The Walther PDP-F series is tailored for female shooters, yet it’s a concealed carry firearm that many people will appreciate. It includes the features we enjoy in the PDP platform, but with a narrower grip and reduced trigger reach. Unlike the larger full-size PDP, the PDP-F is more comfortable for inside-the-waistband carry while still providing great ergonomics.

Similar to the standard PDP pistols, this Walther model includes three-dot white sighting system with a rear sight that allows adjustment for windage and elevation. The slide also has a removable cover plate and can be equipped with one of Walther’s optic adapter plates, enabling the installation of a red dot sight. Ruger LCP Max

Even though it’s small, the .380 ACP cartridge remains a favored choice for top guns used in concealed carry. Ruger achieved significant success with their single-stack LCP pistol, but saw opportunities for enhancement. As the market for micro-compact pistols has grown, and manufacturers have increased the capacity of these small firearms, Ruger decided to follow this trend.

With a slightly longer magazine, the LCP Max can hold 13 rounds of ammunition and is only marginally thicker than the original single-stack configuration. It is easy to handle, dependable, and compact enough to fit in a pocket. Thanks to modern high-performance bullets, a high-capacity .380 caliber pocket pistol remains a powerful concealed carry option.

The Ruger LCP Max offers decent accuracy up to approximately 15 yards, yet it performs best at extremely close distances. Beretta PX4 Storm Compact Carry 2

The Beretta PX4 Storm has been a favored choice for concealed carry, and the latest PX4 Storm Concealed Carry 2 is even more refined for this purpose. Similar to the standard PX4, it includes a rotating barrel mechanism, but the CC2 model comes with a heavier barrel that increases weight and reduces recoil. It also features an enhanced decocker, a modified hammer that is smoother and less likely to catch, and an improved double-action trigger pull.

The entire testing team found the PX4 to be a soft-recoiling and easy-to-handle firearm, with several members really enjoying it. However, we had mixed opinions. Some of us expected it to be smaller than it actually is, and it definitely has a bulky, heavy feel. This bulk does provide better grip on the weapon, but given the wide range of compact pistols that are just as manageable and offer equal or higher capacity, it was difficult for us to develop a strong affection for this one.

The double-action/single-action mechanism may not be the preferred choice for most shooters, but if you’re already a fan of the Beretta 92 or familiar with such pistols, you’ll likely appreciate the PX4 Storm.

Top Revolvers for Hidden Carry

Colt Python 3-inch

Some people believe that real guns are revolvers, and they would only rely on a revolver with their life. There are many excellent revolvers available, but one of my favorites is the Colt Python 3-inch model. In recent years, Colt has revived its classic Python series, and the 3-inch version is one of their latest offerings. The compact .357 Mag revolver may appear short, but it’s entirely a Python. For a revolver enthusiast looking to carry under a jacket, it’s among the top concealed carry options available.

Every aspect of the Colt Python 3-inch model is identical to the standard Python, except for the reduced barrel length. It includes the same high-quality wooden grips, the same frame and cylinder, and newer Pythons have additional reinforcement on the frame beneath the rear sight. It can hold six rounds and utilizes a transfer bar firing mechanism, allowing for safe carry with a round in the chamber under the lowered hammer.

The Cold Python 3-inch model is as much a tribute to nostalgia as it is a high-performing firearm, and it delivers excellent performance. The operation is exceptionally smooth, and the full-size grip makes handling powerful defensive ammunition very manageable. This revolver isn’t the most discreet for concealment, but for OWB carry beneath a jacket, or even IWB under a loose shirt, you won’t find many alternatives that are as effective—or as stylish—as the Python. Smith & Wesson 351 PD .22 WMR

The Smith & Wesson 351 PD is a lightweight J-frame revolver from the AirLite series designed for .22 Magnum ammunition. It remains remarkably light even when loaded and features a substantial 7-round capacity. While other J-frame models chambered in .38 Special and .357 Magnum are more powerful, they are also significantly harder to handle with speed and accuracy — even at short distances. The .22 Magnum-equipped 351 PD provides the same compact and concealable design, but it’s far easier and more enjoyable to shoot.

This is an excellent choice for a training firearm for individuals who regularly carry a larger caliber in a J-frame, and it’s ideal for those who may have difficulty managing the strong, snappy recoil of a .38 or .357. Although the .22 Magnum may not be the most powerful self-defense round, its effectiveness has been enhanced by specialized defensive ammunition such asFederal’s Punch and Speer Gold Dot.

Beyond being a committed EDC revolver, the 351 PD would also serve well as a carry firearm for a trapper or someone who hunts in remote areas. It isn’t highly precise, but it’s effective for small game within 15 yards, and it’s generally an enjoyable and budget-friendly revolver to use. You’ll likely fire it more often than the same model chambered in .357 Mag., and for a tool that could be needed in the most challenging circumstances, this is significant.
