BASKING RIDGE, New Jersey (AP) — Following years of criticism from the right regarding “cancel culture” by the left, some conservatives are now attempting toupset the lives and professionsAmong those who criticized Charlie Kirk following his passing. They are targeting businesses, teachers, media organizations, political opponents, and others they believe are spreading inflammatory language.
A movement initiated by public figures and others on the right has resulted in the termination or disciplinary action against teachers, an Office Depot employee, government staff, a television commentator, and there are expectations of further dismissals soon, just days after the passing of a conservative activist.
Last weekend, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that American Airlines had suspended pilots who he claimed were commemorating Kirk’s murder.
“This conduct is repulsive and they ought to be terminated,” Duffy stated on the social platform X.
As elected officials and conservative influencers praise Kirk as a defender of free speech who supported bold viewpoints, they are also using the methods they witnessed being employed to attack their movement — demands for dismissals, exclusion, and the pressure to be cautious with one’s words.
These methods present a core issue for a country that, according to various reports, is dangerously divided by politics and a feeling of moral anger that social media contributes to. As for Trump, on Sunday, he indicated that he was already utilizing the government to examine his political opponents when questioned about whether he would investigate them following Kirk’s death.

“They are already facing significant scrutiny, many of the individuals who are typically considered part of the left,” Trump said to reporters.
The consequences of Kirk’s death have increasingly served as a measure of the public’s acceptance of political disagreements. Republicans are not only seeking to penalize the alleged perpetrator but also those whose statements they think played a role in the death or disrespected it. Meanwhile, some liberal voices on social media have condemned individuals, like actress Kristin Chenoweth, who showed compassion online regarding Kirk’s death.
The trend we’ve observed for many years appears to be occurring more frequently at this moment than ever before,” said Adam Goldstein from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. He traces the desire to target individuals for their private opinions on tragedies back to the September 11, 2001, attacks. “If there has ever been a time to embrace the positive aspects of our character, it is now.

Goldstein pointed out that the most challenging form of free expression, such as individuals endorsing an assassination, serves as the true test for embracing the First Amendment—particularly when government figures are involved. “The only time you’re genuinely supporting free speech is when it’s not popular,” Goldstein stated. “No one is trying to prevent people from loving puppies and bunnies.”
Utah Governor Spencer Cox, a member of the Republican party, has warned thatThe reason behind the assassination remains unverified. He stated that the suspect currently in custody strongly aligns with the political left and had shown resentment toward Kirk prior to the shooting. However, he and other officials also mentioned that the suspect was not previously recognized as politically active.
Kirk was regarded as a key figure in President Donald Trump’s 2024 election victory, playing a role in increasing the Republican Party’s engagement with younger voters. This implies that many conservatives view the statements made by liberals as inciting violence, rather than as forms of political speech.
I believe President Trump perceives this as an attack on his political movement,” stated Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., on NBC, while mentioning the two assassination attempts on Trump along with Kirk’s death. “This is unique and different. It’s an attack on a movement through the use of violence. And that’s how most Republicans view it.
Senator Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee who is seeking the governorship, urged social media users to demand the dismissals of an assistant dean at Middle Tennessee State University and faculty members at Austin Peay State University and Cumberland University.
All three were fired due to remarks considered unsuitable for showing a lack of empathy, or even for expressing joy, regarding Kirk’s shooting. One individual stated that Kirk “brought his fate upon himself.”
Several NFL teams decided on Sunday to observe a moment of silence for Kirk. In the past, football teams have honored victims following school shootings or an attack on a place of worship. They have also acknowledged significant deaths of public individuals, weather-related tragedies, and global events like Hamas’ assault on Israel in October 2023.
Since conservatives had previously felt silenced by liberals due to their opinions, Trump, on his first day in office, issued an executive order that banned all federal government employees from engaging in actions that would “unconstitutionally limit the free speech of any American citizen.”
In February during the Munich Security Conference, Vice President JD Vance condemned the previous Biden administration for prompting “private companies to suppress individuals who spoke what ultimately became an evident truth” about the pandemic. He also criticized European nations for restricting political expression.
“Under Donald Trump’s leadership, we may not agree with your opinions, but we will stand up to protect your right to express them in the public arena, whether we agree or not,” Vance stated at that time.
Nevertheless, the Trump administration has alsocracked downon immigrants and scholars for their speech.
Goldstein pointed out that the Trump administration’s State Department, in the minutes following Kirk’s death, cautioned that it would cancel the visas of any foreigners who celebrated Kirk’s assassination. “I can’t recall another instance where the United States publicly warned individuals about the potential cancellation of their visas,” Goldstein stated.
The faint sign of bipartisan consensus following the assassination was that social media was escalating the violence and spreading false information in harmful manners.
I can’t stress enough the harm that social media and the internet are causing us all,” Cox stated on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He mentioned that “the most influential companies in history have discovered how to manipulate our minds and make us addicted to anger.
However, numerous Republican legislators have also focused their criticism on mainstream news outlets that opposed Trump, attributing to a harmful political atmosphere due to his ongoing language portraying opponents as adversaries.
On Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., criticized media outlets for featuring guests who labeled Trump a “fascist” or drew comparisons between him and Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
These claims stem from Trump’s efforts to reverse his 2020 election defeat, his granting of pardons to those involved in the January 6th insurrection, and various policy disagreements. These include his immigration enforcement actions, use of the National Guard, large-scale dismissals of federal workers, and his disregard for traditional constraints on presidential authority.
However, for Britt, these expressions were unjust, incorrect, and incited violence.
There should be repercussions for individuals spreading such hatred and showing joy in this situation,” Britt stated. “And I am convinced that there will be.
