GLENDALE, Arizona—Top figures from the Trump administration and the Republican Party honored Charlie Kirk on Sunday during a political and religious event unlike anything seen in recent times, as they filled a packed football stadium to declare the deceased activist a Christian and conservative martyr.
President Trump, government officials, conservative commentators, and Christian ministers paid tribute to Kirk during the lengthy ceremony, which took place just under two weeks after the 31-year-old father of two was fatally shot. His passing intensifiedpolitical tensionsthroughout the nation and increased concerns that American politics had stepped into a perilous new phase.
Trump referred to Kirk as a “great American hero” and described him as an evangelist and martyr for freedom. “His voice on earth will resonate through the generations,” Trump stated. “He will live forever.” On Sunday, Trump also confirmed his intention to present Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The gathering switched between political and religious messages presented by conservative leaders and Kirk’s associates. Attendees participated in Christian contemporary music and raised their hands during prayers. Volunteers encouraged new voters to sign up as Republicans, and senior executives of Kirk’s organizationTurning Point USA, remembered how Kirk established one of the most significant conservative political groups. The Kirk family resides in Arizona, where Turning Point USA is located.
Erika, the wife of Kirk, held back her tears as she stepped onto the stage to a wave of enthusiastic applause. In a powerful display of mercy, she revealed that she had forgiven the man who took her husband’s life. Several people in the crowd were moved to tears.
He wanted to save young men, just like the one who took his life,” she said, pausing to compose herself. “I forgive him, I forgive him because that’s what Christ did and that’s what Charlie would do.

Kirk, who will assume her late husband’s role as leader of his organization Turning Point USA, promised to continue and build upon his mission. She stated that the world needs “a group that will guide young people away from the path of suffering and wrongdoing.” Following Kirk’s passing, the organization has received interest from tens of thousands of students eager to bring Turning Point USA to their campuses.
Trump was less generous.
He didn’t despise his rivals, he just wanted the best for them,” he stated. “That’s where I differ from Charlie. I despise my opponents and I don’t wish the best for them. I’m sorry, I’m truly sorry, Erika.
Trump’s speech was as much a campaign rally as a tribute, in which he pledged to deploy troops to Chicago and Memphis and criticized Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Kamala Harris. Several other speeches were confrontational, cautioning opponents of the MAGA political movement that conservatives would retaliate following Kirk’s passing. The speakers did not clearly identify their adversaries, but they attacked typical conservative targets, such as the media, Marxists, and Democrats.
The individual accused of killing Kirk, Tyler Robinson, who is 22 years old, is facing charges such as aggravated murder, felony firearm discharge, obstruction of justice, and tampering with a witness. Officials have alleged that he shot Kirk fatally on September 10 from the rooftop of a building located on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem. Prosecutors stated they plan to pursue the death penalty.
In a passionate speech, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller stated that Kirk’s death inspired a group of conservatives who he promised would overcome “the forces of wickedness and evil” with “righteous anger.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth referred to Kirk as a soldier who engaged in a “spiritual battle” that led to a Christian resurgence in the United States.
Kirk was referred to as a Christian martyr by multiple speakers, including his friend and conservative commentator Benny Johnson, who characterized Kirk’s life as a miracle and stated, “You cut down a martyr, his influence increases.”
Kirk was a vocal individual who, prior to his passing, received both admiration from conservatives and criticism from liberals due to his opposition to same-sex marriage and abortion. He claimed the Civil Rights Act was an error and resisted initiatives promoting diversity and gun control. He described transgender individuals as experiencing “mental delusion.”
He played a key role in linking Trump with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Trump stated, and would have been among the first to attend a press event on Monday where Trump claimed he would unveil “a solution for autism.”
People started waiting for the event at State Farm Stadium, located just outside Phoenix, at least six hours before the memorial ceremony, with many dressed in red, white, and blue attire along with cowboy boots and “Make America Great Again” hats.
Shannon Brodowicz, 31, a homemaker from Phoenix, along with her husband, brought their four-month-old son wearing an American flag onesie. “We wanted to instill in him from a young age that we stand up for what matters,” Brodowicz explained.

Erika Kirk, who will take her deceased husband’s positionAs the leader of Turning Point USA, she wiped her eyes while appearing on stage, prompting the audience to applaud as she got ready to speak. She has pledged to carry on his efforts to engage young conservatives through tours, podcasts, and public gatherings.
Attendees at the gathering, which began at 11 a.m. local time, were encouraged to dress in their “Sunday Best—Red, White, or Blue,” and to contribute to Turning Point USA instead of sending flowers.

Trump came in to cheers of “U.S.A., U.S.A., U.S.A.” as he gave the audience a fist pump from a private box. High-ranking members of the Trump administration entered the stadium earlier in the day as worship music was playing, including national intelligence director Tulsi Gabbard, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Kennedy.
The memorial featured security measures comparable to those of the Super Bowl, reserved for major national events. Visitors, many of whom arrived early in the morning, held signs reading “Turning Point,” “Never Surrender Remember Charlie Kirk,” and “Here I am. Lord, send Me—Isaiah 6:8” along with an illustration of Kirk. Instrumental music was played, and attendees wiped away their tears.

Kirk served as a representative of the MAGA movement and has been acknowledged by Trump for his role in gaining support from younger individuals, contributing to Trump’s re-election. Certain conservatives called for companies to terminate employees who expressed opinions about the shooting that were not aligned with right-wing views.
Donald Trump Jr., who played a role in launching Kirk’s career, commended Kirk for regularly giving “one of the most significant platforms in the conservative movement” to individuals who held differing views during his college speaking engagements, stating, “When people hold different opinions, we don’t suppress them.”
