A Nostalgic Reunion on “Shifting Gears”
Debbe Dunning, known for her role as Heidi the Tool Time girl on the iconic sitcom Home Improvement, recently made a guest appearance on the season 2 premiere of Shifting Gears, the ABC comedy starring her former costar Tim Allen. This marked a significant reunion with her Home Improvement family, including Richard Karn and Patricia Richardson.
Dunning shared how the opportunity came about during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. She revealed that she had dinner with Tim Allen and his family in June, where she jokingly expressed her desire to appear on one of his shows. “I said, ‘There’s been a lot of us that have done little guest spots on his previous show Last Man Standing—except for me!’” she recalled. Allen then invited her to join the Shifting Gears cast, and the rest is history.
The Reunion
The scene featured Allen’s character, Matt Parker, reluctantly attending a grief support group. Dunning was thrilled to be part of this moment. “This is what our viewers have wanted for almost 30 years,” she said. The dynamic among the cast members was electric, and Dunning described the experience as surreal. “It felt like we were back in the same studio where I used to work with my family for years.”
She also reflected on the emotional impact of returning to Burbank, where she was born just across the street from ABC. “The studios have changed a little bit, but the dynamics are really beautiful,” she said. “It was good and it was bad. You come in, and you get the feel. All of a sudden your adrenaline is going like, ‘This is amazing. I’m so excited to be back.'”
Reflections on Home Improvement
Dunning shared her memories of working with the child stars of Home Improvement, including Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Zachery Ty Bryan, and Taran Noah Smith. She fondly remembered teasing them, especially after the show ended. “I used to tease ’em. I think it was like three years after the show, I go, ‘Oh, come on. I used to change your diaper.’ They’re like, ‘No, you didn’t!’” she laughed.
She also praised Jonathan Taylor Thomas for his wit and maturity. “He had such good calm with timing. He really handled the death of a teenage heartthrob very well,” she said. Dunning noted that Jonathan’s mother played a key role in keeping him grounded, which resonated with her as a new mom at the time.
Career Impact
Dunning credited Home Improvement with giving her a name in the industry. “I did a lot of things. I was the Taco Bell commercial girl. I did 20 commercials for them, and I was that girl. But that wasn’t anything. That was like, ‘Oh, she was in Taco Bell commercials. Who was that girl that nobody really knew?’” she explained.
However, her role on Home Improvement opened many doors for her. “It gave me a name. I have gone to the most beautiful places in the world just because of my one part on a show that I did almost 30 years ago. It has changed and helped my life,” she said.
Future Possibilities
While Dunning is open to future opportunities, she remains realistic about the current entertainment landscape. “You talk to an agent and they’re like, ‘How many followers do you have? Let us know when you’re in the millions.’ I’m not going to be posing naked. Not at this stage,” she joked.
Despite the challenges, Dunning remains grateful for her journey. “I do go to bed at night and think about, ‘Wow, how lucky did I get?’ I really and truly am so blessed to have done this particular part,” she said.
Final Thoughts
Dunning’s return to the set of Shifting Gears was more than just a nostalgic trip—it was a celebration of the Home Improvement legacy and the enduring bonds formed during those years. As she continues to explore new opportunities, her fans eagerly await what comes next.
