How KC couples view Swift-Kelce’s engagement | Diverging opinions

I could feel that love was in the air in Kansas City on Tuesday following pop star Taylor Swift’s announcement of her engagement to Chiefs player Travis Kelce. So, I headed out onto the streets to gather reactions from local couples regarding the couple’s upcoming wedding.

And let me tell you, the people I talked to in and around the Crossroads arts district were mostly in favor of Kelce and Swift officially becoming a couple. Others weren’t as supportive, but they still hope the power couple the best.

Taylor Swift revealed her engagement to Kelce on Instagram and the news quickly went viral – people ranging from celebrities to politicians to regular citizens all shared their thoughts. The couple had been in a relationship for roughly two years before Kelce, a tight end with the Chiefs, proposed.

“Finally, bro, damn,” said Ozzie Field, a 26-year-old from San Diego. Field mentioned he recently relocated here to be near his girlfriend, Aliya Horton, 21, from Kansas City.

“I came here because of love,” he stated.

Later, Field looked toward Horton, drew her in, and kissed her. I wasn’t sure how this chivalrous moment played out right before my eyes, but it was pretty impressive to see.

Love is a strong force, I considered.

But returning to Kelce and Swift, Tuesday’s most talked-about news of the day. Horton stated she had not heard about the announcement until I intercepted her and Field to obtain their perspectives.

“That’s truly quite crazy,” she said.

Field then interjected.

“It’s about time he proposed to her,” he said.

Horton stated that the relationship between Swift and Kelce has been a beneficial change for the area – and she is correct. Swift has positively impacted Kansas City by contributing financially to local charities and consistently attending Chiefs games. Kelce, a well-liked and skilled athlete, is already a standout. He is expected to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, has hosted “Saturday Night Live,” is a podcaster, and is poised for a successful career in the entertainment industry.

“They’ve been in a relationship for some time and are extremely well-known, so I believe this is great for us,” Horton said.

More than Taylor Swift’s PR stunt

I’ll be the first to say I initially believed the Kelce-Swift relationship was a publicity move when she began going to Chiefs’ games in 2023. As time passed, my perspective shifted. The turning point for me happened when I watched video of Swift running into Kelce’s arms and kissing him after one of her shows abroad.

I gave in. These young individuals genuinely have feelings for one another. It’s now confirmed. Kelce and Swift are apparently in love.

On Tuesday, another pair I talked to were just as thrilled about the latest progress in their growing relationship.

Malcolm Cole, 28, from Kansas City, and Harley Guenther, 24, from Overland Park, shared my opinion when I mentioned that the love bug was becoming widespread in the city.

“Yes, it is,” Cole stated.

Guenther mentioned that she was the one who informed Cole about the engagement.

“What was the first thing I told you this morning?” she asked Cole.

“She remarked, ‘Oh my God,'” Cole stated. Before he had a chance to finish his thought, Guenther completed the sentence.

“They are engaged,” she remarked. “I hadn’t anticipated it,” Guenther added.

Cole praised Swift and Kelce for their engagement and sent them good wishes. He used the nickname Kelce mentioned he gave her — Tay Tay.

Let me begin by saying congratulations to my guy Tay Tay,” he said. “To my guy, Trav. It’s like I grew up with these people, you know?

Cole and Guenther stated they now view Swift as a resident of Kansas City.

“We enjoy watching someone who isn’t from around here… discover some affection,” Cole said.

Guenther stated: “She is now considered family.”

They’re fortunate I have a concern for it.

Not all couples I talked to were as excited about Kelce and Swift as others, but that’s fine. Kansas City isn’t a single entity. The city is as varied as its residents, and we all have different life and learning experiences.

But love is a language understood by all. Although the most recent couple I spoke with mentioned they were still in the dating stage, they still took the time to share their thoughts on this popular subject.

The couple, Alexandria Knight and Jim Mack from Kansas City, mentioned that they rarely listen to Swift’s music and were not aware of her engagement to Kelce.

“It’s my opinion that they’re fortunate I care and even recognize them,” Knight, 27, stated when questioned about the announcement.

Knight was a gracious competitor, nonetheless. She burst into laughter after giving her response.

She mentioned she enjoys electronic dance music. “My music doesn’t include lyrics, so you know, it’s part of the rave scene. But that’s fine with me.”

Mack, 34, remarked about the couple, “It’s mind-blowing,” as he and Knight carried on with their journey.

I couldn’t stop thinking that the two of them were meant for each other, I mused. And I’m cheering for them and the rest just as much as I am for Kelce and Swift to keep their relationships strong.

Is love not contagious?
