In January, Priscilla Abii started her new year like many others: by outlining her goals and resolutions for the upcoming year.
Abii, 25, had only been in her new position as a marketing assistant for a few months and wasn’t certain if her career was heading where she wanted it to. She attempted to discuss her job with friends and family, but they weren’t familiar with the marketing field and would simply ask, “What do you do for work?”
Therefore, she sought out an alternative source that many individuals are discovering helpful when dealing with life’s more significant inquiries: ChatGPT.
In the past few years, since generative AI chatbots became widely accessible to the public, individuals have started using them for therapy, to address feelings of loneliness and isolation, to deal with relationship issues, and beyond.
Of course, they are also turning to artificial intelligence.for career advice.
The workout was beneficial for Abii, who resides close to Baltimore: “I had heard about other areas of marketing that could potentially offer higher income and boost my earnings in the future,” she says to the Muara Digital TeamMake It. “So I thought, I’ll check out ChatGPT to explore the opportunities available.”
Abii’s research allowed her to investigate various areas within her field, such as growth marketing and data analysis, along with the certifications that could assist her in acquiring essential skills for these areas. Although she hasn’t changed her current job, she mentions that her research provides her with some direction on where she can advance her career next.
AI collects data from all sources, which is beneficial since sometimes you aren’t aware of where to begin, you don’t know the most effective places to locate answers, and occasionally you aren’t sure what questions to pose,” Abii states. “It proved to be a very useful resource.
Individuals are leveraging artificial intelligence to plan their professional paths.
As individuals grow more accustomed to AI tools, they are becoming more precise about the issues they want these tools to address. Users of Claude, the generative AI assistant developed by Anthropic, are moving their career-focused questions away from basic resume assistance and instead using the platform for extended, strategic planning.
Approximately 20% of all career-related discussions aim to assist users in developing a tailored career plan, as per an analysis by Anthropic on 4.5 million Claude interactions shared with Make It.
Artificial intelligence can be particularly beneficial for young professionals beginning their careers. Jeanie Thompson, 23, a writer and marketer based in Boston, has recently begun exploring Fide, an exclusive career application that includes a feature allowing users to consult an AI assistant on subjects such as preparing for a job interview or entering a specific industry. The app also presents her with daily questions designed to assist her in defining her long-term objectives, such as identifying her marketing strengths and the boundaries she aims to overcome in the marketing field.
In addition to using the app, Thompson continues to seek assistance from friends and coworkers when dealing with major career decisions, despite the difficulty this can pose as a junior employee.

Thompson mentions that she has worked to “get over the embarrassment of feeling foolish for asking questions,” she states. “I’m still young, and I realize there are many things I don’t know, and I believe it’s crucial to take advantage of the knowledge available to you,” such as the experience of more senior coworkers.
I’m simply trying to take in and learn all that I can, as I realize they have experiences to tell.
Where AI career guidance is lacking
AI is excellent at managing administrative tasks and supporting research, but it cannot replace human interaction, according to Ruth Gotian, anauthora specialist in guidance and management growth.
According to Gotian, advice from a chatbot is “likely to be quite general,” whereas a mentor can offer you perspectives based on their personal experience and potentially introduce you to new opportunities.
Next, there’s the emotional support that artificial intelligence is unable to provide.
There are two functions of mentorship,” Gotian explains. “One is to assist you with career advice — applying to certain places, speaking with specific individuals, and so on. However, it’s also about providing psychosocial support, which means being your supporter, a listening ear, and helping you develop a strategy if you don’t achieve exactly what you hoped for. AI hasn’t reached that stage yet.
Artificial intelligence technology does not create the same level of trust and empathy that people experience among themselves, she notes. This is one reason why some individuals refrain from becoming too personal with chatbots, according to a 26-year-old partnerships manager who uses the social media handle Rai Tryna.

“I’m aware that many individuals turn to ChatGPT for relationship and therapy guidance, but I’m not yet personally at ease with that,” says Rai, who resides in West Palm Beach, Florida.
AI search results can also be excessively self-congratulatory, he notes: “It doesn’t always provide the genuine feedback you seek for your personal growth.”
That feeling may not remain permanent, he notes, since AI systems are constantly receiving new information daily. “I believe that over time, the AI is always improving and will become more effective at offering better guidance to individuals,” Rai says.
Ziad Ahmed, 26, believes that artificial intelligence has the potential to address numerous global challenges, such as in the fields of healthcare and production. However, this Gen Z marketing specialist based in New York City is worried about relying on AI to substitute human interaction, particularly within professional environments.
I believe people may be seeking AI due to the insufficient emphasis on face-to-face mentorship and development,” he states, “which workplaces, society, and governments should truly provide.
A suitable location for introspection
Currently, some users view AI as a useful tool for encouraging self-reflection.
Michael Campbell, 41, works in human resources in Dallas. For the last year, he has utilized ChatGPT to complete personality assessments and determine if he is in the correct career path.
Everyone has their own vision of an ideal career, and I was interested in: Does my concept match my personality?” Campbell mentions that AI assessments have shown him he is risk-averse and dislikes stress. His AI-driven research “helped me grasp how I can offer [HR] solutions without worrying about it.
AI assists him in mapping out his career possibilities: In what ways might an MBA influence his professional path? Which job roles would help him progress toward eventually becoming a chief human resources officer?

It’s beneficial to learn about possible results from the vast experiences shared online. “Even if I had a CHRO friend, they could share their own experience, but it would be limited by their knowledge,” Campbell says.
In the end, Campbell views his AI-driven job search as a complement to his existing job hunt, rather than a substitute for human connections. “You still need people to point out, ‘Hey, maybe you’re completely wrong about this,'” he explains.
Additionally, as he provides the chatbot with his previous work experience, it typically confirms that he is a good fit for another HR position, but it hasn’t led to completely new career possibilities.
“It hasn’t provided me with anything completely unusual, like you would be better suited as a pilot,” he says.
