Central Park is New York City’s most beloved recreational area. It offers an ideal setting for spending hours strolling, relaxing on a bench, hanging out with companions, and experiencing some of the city’s most renowned attractions. Who wouldn’t enjoy walking along the well-known tree-covered Mall or listening to music near the Bethesda Fountain? Have you ever been to the historic Central Park Zoo? One of my favorite things to do in New York is rowing a boat in Central Park.

If you’ve ever spotted it in films or walked by the Loeb Boathouse and questioned if it’s worth hiring boats in Central Park, you’re in the perfect spot. Rowing boats in Central Park is a must-do activity for many tourists and even some residents of New York City.

So, is this famous activity truly as remarkable as it appears? Is it genuinely worth hiring boats in Central Park, or is it simply a gimmick for visitors?

Some Brief Details Regarding Rowing Vessels in Central Park

• Where:Central Park Lake is located in Mid Park, near 72nd Street, and is situated closer to 5th Avenue on the eastern side. It is approximately a 10-minute walk from Columbus Circle.
• Operated by:The Loeb Boathouse has been restored and is now open again as The Central Park Boathouse.
• Hours:April – November – Daily from 10 AM to 6:30 PM
• Costs:Mon-Th $25 per hour, Fri – Sun $30 per hour
• How many people are in a boat?Maximum of 4 people per boat.
• Can children row?Children younger than 12 need to be with an adult and must be at least 3 feet in height.
• Are life jackets needed?Some claim that life jackets come with every boat, but I have never received one; you need to request them if you wish to have one.
• Restaurant Info:The Central Park Boathouse Dockside Dining, Bar, and Cafe operates from 11 AM until sunset. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 11 AM to 9 PM and on Sunday from 11 AM to 8 PM.

Central Park Boat Rental Origin Story

The Central Park Lake is a 20-acre artificial water feature located within the park. It was once a marsh that served as a location for ice skating and boating during the park’s early years.

In 1950, the lake was inaccessible for four years to allow nature to recover and flourish. The Loeb family subsequently gifted the stunning boathouse, featuring a copper roof and a dining terrace, in 1954.

Another restoration in 1984 integrated the boathouse and boat rental area more deeply into the scenery of Central Park. Notable films and television episodes suchSex in the City and When Harry Met Sally turned the place into a classic New York spot. The eatery was closed once more in 2022 for upgrades but reopened in 2024 and it’s absolutely beautiful!!!

Central Park Boat Rentals – PreciselyWhat to Expect

• You’ll notice a line as you get closer to the boathouse and rental counter. It’s typically not very long and progresses fairly fast since there are many boats available for rent.
• As you get closer, you’ll see signs featuring a QR code that you can scan with your phone to download and complete a brief waiver form prior to renting a boat.
• At the entrance, only credit cards are permitted, no cash. The cost is $25 per hour on weekdays and $30 per hour on weekends.
• As many as 4 individuals can fit in the boat.
• You and your group will be assisted into a rowboat that has oars. Request a life jacket if you need one. After that, you’ll be pushed out onto the lake and set off! Simply return after approximately an hour.
• Many individuals are struggling with their oars, and boats occasionally collide as they come and go from the dock. Nevertheless, as you venture further into the broader sections of the lake, it becomes less crowded. You can row for an hour beneath bridges and past islands. You’ll encounter numerous turtles and birds, with the New York City skyline visible around the park. Some people simply row to an open spot, float, enjoy snacks, take pictures, and unwind. I’ve witnessed couples having full wedding photo sessions, bringing wine and cheese, and even playing cards and reading books. Everything is possible – it’s New York!
• It is possible to experience longer queues during busy times or seasons.
• You might get tired from rowing for an hour, so take a rest.
• Don’t upset the status quo!
• Don’t worry about the algae that makes the lake appear green – but I still wouldn’t suggest jumping in!
