Is Your 10-Year-Old Car Worth Fixing?

Understanding the Necessity of Replacing a Worn Wheel Bearing

If you own a 2015 Toyota Camry LE with 155,000 miles, it’s not uncommon to encounter issues with components such as the left front wheel ball bearings. If a diagnostic test has indicated that these bearings are worn and need replacement, including the hub, this is typically a reasonable and necessary repair. Bearings can wear out over time due to regular use and mileage, and if they are making noise or feel loose, they should be replaced promptly.

There are two main methods for replacing a worn bearing. One option is to replace just the hub and bearing, which may require specialized tools like a hydraulic press. Another method involves replacing the entire bearing assembly along with the spindle, which is often quicker and less labor-intensive but comes at a higher cost. It’s important to consult with a qualified mechanic to determine the best approach based on your specific vehicle and situation.

Addressing Overheating Issues in Older Vehicles

Overheating can be a frustrating issue, especially if it occurs consistently. Years ago, some car owners faced similar problems where their vehicles would overheat, even in the summer. In one instance, a Toyota owner found that turning on the heater helped cool the engine down. However, this was not a long-term solution. Later, when the car was sold to a family member, the engine ended up overheating severely. During the engine replacement, it was discovered that the thermostat was malfunctioning.

While it’s true that engines can vary in temperature, none should ever overheat. When diagnosing an overheating problem, checking coolant levels is a starting point. Other steps include inspecting the cooling fan operation, the condition of the radiator, and the functionality of the thermostat. These checks can help identify the root cause of the issue and prevent further damage.

Proper Battery Testing Techniques

Testing a car battery can sometimes be tricky, especially if it’s located in a hard-to-reach area. A neighbor, who is a retired mechanic, tested your battery by attaching a tester to the jumpstart posts. This method might not always provide accurate results. The most reliable way to test a battery is to remove the cables (using a memory saver to preserve settings), clean the battery posts, and then perform the test. Many manufacturers, including General Motors, recommend removing the battery cable before attaching testing equipment to ensure accuracy.

Choosing the Right Electric Car and Truck

If you’re considering replacing two vehicles in your household, a small electric car and a full-sized truck could be a practical choice. Ford trucks have a reputation for reliability and performance, and many people have had positive experiences with them. For an electric car, the Hyundai Ionic 5 has received recognition for its performance and features. According to the New England Motor Press, the Ford F-150 was named the Official Winter Truck of the Year, while the Hyundai Ionic 5 won the EV of the Year award. These choices reflect a balance between capability and innovation.

Troubleshooting Electrical Issues in Older Vehicles

Working on an old, rusty truck can present challenges, particularly with electrical systems like lights and relays. Poor ground circuits are a common issue in older vehicles. To make diagnosis and repairs easier, experienced mechanics often use a tool called a PowerProbe. This device can deliver both power and ground to test circuits. While the PowerProbe is effective, it can be expensive. Cheaper alternatives include using jumper wires, though they lack protection against incorrect connections.

Testing Drive Belts Beyond Visual Inspection

In the past, cars required frequent belt replacements, but modern belts tend to last longer. However, there are ways to check their condition beyond looking for cracks. Manufacturers like Continental and Gates offer a gauge with teeth that can measure wear on a serpentine belt. While this tool is primarily designed to promote belt sales, it can still provide useful information about the belt’s condition.
