Having worked in journalism for such a long time, I have come to understand the significant influence that words can exert on individuals.
A “word” is defined as a sequence of spoken sounds or written symbols that convey meaning. Therefore, the significance of words should not come as a surprise to anyone, as they have the power to stir emotions within all of us, whether positive or negative.
We have all heard the classic phrase, “actions speak louder than words,” yet sometimes hearing the actual words being spoken provides a more accurate understanding of the true meaning the speaker is attempting to convey.
It would be great if the only emotions conveyed through words were positive, but unfortunately, in today’s world, it’s at best an even split. These days, thanks to social media, television, and other platforms, the immediate effect of those words can spread globally much faster.
When reflecting on the effective use of language, there are numerous aspects worth appreciating, even amidst the current challenges of negativity and aggression in society. Many of us would concur that a handful of positive words can frequently uplift spirits, brighten our day, offer hope, express affection, inspire us to strive harder, and accomplish countless other beneficial effects.
They can also serve as a pivotal moment that influences how people interact with you on a daily basis. For instance, using “please” and “thank you” can frequently determine whether you receive excellent service or less satisfactory assistance.
We also fail to offer enough praise through our words; the unfortunate pattern of today is to focus on the negative and linger on it. Often, a compliment not only acknowledges something positive, but also motivates the individual to repeat it or improve upon it next time.
From an entertainment standpoint, language can have a significant impact. Consider all the amazing books, poetry, expressions of belief, humorous monologues, inspiring speeches, and other forms of communication that have brought joy to our lives.
Similarly, when challenges arise, carefully considered words can transform a difficult situation into a path toward healing, especially when we all might need some positivity. There is always something positive to convey through words if you search diligently, but unfortunately, some parts of our society prefer to concentrate on hatred and pessimism instead.
When it comes to children, language serves as a powerful educational resource that significantly impacts their future achievements. Reading plays a crucial role in every area of the curriculum, and without words conveying the necessary information, learning would not be possible.
It’s truly remarkable to consider the immense strength of words. They have ignited conflicts, yet simultaneously, they have paved the way for peace. At times, they bring to mind the title of a classic Clint Eastwood film, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.”
Another factor that must be considered is the context and flexibility in the usage of certain words. When spoken with a particular intonation or tone, they can provoke anger, yet the same word can frequently convey an entirely different meaning.
That’s why I dislike witnessing how artificial intelligence is gradually influencing our use of language. When you express something through words, it shouldn’t originate from a pre-set computer program, but rather from your own thoughts and emotions to genuinely convey your real feelings.
Language forms the foundation of personal creativity and distinguishes humans from machines. Should we envision a society where technology performs all our thinking, thereby eliminating the role of creativity? I believe that is not desirable.
Another discouraging trend is the way people communicate today through texts and emails, where words are often shortened or fragmented in messages. Sorry, but “U OK 4 for 2-day” doesn’t really convey a genuine thought from the mind or heart.
On the other hand, words frequently propagate hate, prejudice, ignorance, and resentment. Unfortunately, there are numerous individuals who flourish in these domains, promoting their own hatred and skewed beliefs to others.
It’s unfortunate that there are numerous classic instances of language being employed as a tool against others in today’s society, yet this is the reality we inhabit. This is why it’s so disheartening to witness words, which have the power to create great joy, being utilized in a different manner to spread hatred or incite violence.
Prior to speaking or writing, individuals should remember a straightforward phrase that encapsulates everything: “words matter.” We must never lose sight of the actual significance behind those two words.
Many of us can recall a time in our childhood when someone used the expression, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.” It would be wonderful if more individuals embraced this approach these days.
So, how will you use your words today — to share positive or negative ideas? I hope you’ll choose the positive path and continue doing so long after we meet again on Thursday.
