If you’re a traveler on a tight budget, getting a highly sought-after seat without paying additional charges is achievable — though it may require careful planning.
If you’ve already selected your seat while buying your tickets, you have an edge. However, many airlines don’t let passengers in the most basic economy class do this, and that’s when the timing of your check-in can be crucial. This is because during check-in, airlines allocate seats to those who haven’t paid for one — meaning the time of day you check in could determine whether you get a comfortable window seat or a middle seat squeezed between two travelers in the last row near the restroom.
If this applies to you, don’t hesitate when you receive an email regarding checking in for your flight.

“Always say right at the 24-hour mark, if possible,” a travel advisor named Fora said.Amna Ismailnoted. “Turn on an alarm, even if it seems trivial, and do so, particularly if you’re traveling in economy class.”
The Argument for Arriving Early
Several airlines permit travelers to complete check-in 24 hours prior to their flight, and this action can enhance your likelihood of securing desired seating in the area you prefer –– without needing to pay additional fees to ensure it.
When travelers check in at the last minute, “often, if the flight is full, especially during holidays or peak times, you might end up with a seat in the back or an undesirable middle seat, which many people dislike,” saidKaty Nastroa travel expert and representative for Going, a company that monitors airfare promotions.
At the same time, even arriving to check in as soon as possible doesn’t always ensure a specific seat, as other elements might influence how many window or aisle seat options remain available at the time of check-in.
The remaining seat allocations “differ significantly depending on the route and the time of year, such as your destination. … For example, on a Wednesday afternoon traveling from Las Vegas to another location, your chances of securing a window or aisle seat are higher compared to a Friday evening,” Ismail mentioned.
If you’re traveling to a city where numerous individuals hold loyalty status with an airline—such as San Francisco and United Airlines, for instance—then those with loyalty status are more likely to secure the highly sought-after seat upgrade, regardless of how early you check in, Ismail noted.
If you hold a loyalty status with an airline, it’s also beneficial to check in early, as this can position you higher on the potential upgrade list. “Airlines are keen on selling those seats initially, so they tend to hold off until the last minute before offering any upgrades,” Nastro explained. “Therefore, if you aim to increase your chances of receiving an upgrade, you should check in as soon as possible.”
There are situations in which you can check in at the airport and still secure a good seat, but this approach carries certain risks.
Checking in at a later time could potentially get you a better seat, according to travel experts, but it also raises the likelihood of being rebooked onto a different flight and being denied access to the one you originally planned to take. This happens because airlinesare permitted to sell more seats than are available on a flightwithin reasonable limits to account for “no-shows.”

When airlines are determining which passengers should be rebooked onto the next flight due to overbooking, “sometimes they go with the person who checked in last,” Nastro explained.
Alternative Methods to Obtain a Superior Seat at No Cost
If you arrive early for check-in, don’t be discouraged if you only find seats in the back row.
Individuals should definitely arrive early, but continue to review this map if you’re looking for a more favorable seat,” Nastro stated. This is because seating choices may become available as people adjust their itineraries, and “you can engage in a game of seat musical chairs.
“I’ve experienced situations where a better window seat became available, allowing me to move a few rows forward and choose a window seat instead of an aisle,” Nastro explained as an example.
Additionally, you can disconnect from the internet and approach a gate agent to inquire about alternative seating options after you have completed check-in for your flight. Airlines occasionally sell more tickets than available seats, or passengers may fail to board the flight they reserved. This is why it’s beneficial to request your preferred seating when you reach the ticket counter of your flight before boarding begins.
Take it from Ismail, who implemented this approach when she purchased a flight that only had middle seats available.
By inquiring with a gate agent about alternative seating choices, Ismail managed to switch to a window seat, which he favored. “It was a United Premium Economy seat … and there was no fee,” Ismail remembered. “Being polite and showing courtesy can make a big difference.”
