NY community colleges make top national list: See the ranking

Thirty New York-based schools have been recognizedWalletHub’s recently released listtop and bottom community colleges in 2025.

A personal finance company evaluated more than 650 community colleges based on 18 factors, including in-state tuition costs and graduation rates, with New York being one of them.ranked 20th among all 50 states community-college systems.

Which community colleges in New York are included in the list?

Only one community college in New York was included in WalletHub’s top 100: CUNY Stella and Charles Guttman Community College located in Manhattan. The institution ranked 98th with an overall score of 63.3 and has some of the highest expenditures per student, as reported by WalletHub.

WalletHub chose a group of 653 schools from the list of American Association of Community Colleges members and evaluated them based on three main areas — cost and funding, educational results, and job outcomes — along with 18 important factors.

The cost and financingcategory examined these factors:

  • Price of in-state tuition and charges
  • Availability of free community college education
  • Average level of grant or scholarship assistance received
  • Access to job-related services for learners
  • Per-pupil spending
  • School spending efficiency
  • Faculty salary
  • Core revenue per FTE enrollment

The education outcomes category analyzed these components:

  • First-year retention rate
  • Graduation rate
  • Transfer-out rate
  • Certifications granted based on 200 full-time equivalent students
  • Student-faculty ratio
  • Share of full-time faculty
  • Acknowledgment of credit for life experiences

And the career outcomescategory considered these factors:

  • Student-loan default rate
  • Median salary after attending
  • Percentage of former students who earn more than the average income of a high school graduate

The data utilized to generate the ranking was gathered on July 15, 2025, with the information coming from the National Center for Education Statistics, Campaign for Free College Tuition, U.S. Department of Education, and Council for Community & Economic Research.
