Barack Obama Wins Emmy for Outstanding Narrator at 2025 Creative Arts Emmys

Barack Obama has made history by winning the Emmy for Outstanding Narrator at the 2025 Creative Arts Emmys, marking his third Emmy win. The former U.S. president was honored for his narration in Netflix’s Our Oceans, a docuseries that explores the world’s five major oceans through an engaging and educational lens.

While Obama wasn’t physically present in Los Angeles to accept the award, it was presented on his behalf by Jordan Klepper. The category featured strong competition from other notable names, including Sir David Attenborough, Idris Elba, Tom Hanks, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

A Deep Dive into Our Oceans

Our Oceans is a groundbreaking series that offers viewers a unique perspective on the planet’s most mysterious aquatic environments. The project, which premiered in early 2025, features Obama’s voice guiding audiences through episodes dedicated to each of the world’s oceans. His narration highlights the challenges faced by marine life, such as the migration patterns of humpback whales in the Pacific and the impact of climate change on Arctic walruses.

The Indian Ocean episode, in particular, stood out and played a key role in Obama’s Emmy win. The series was created by the same team behind Our Great National Parks and utilized advanced underwater filming technology to capture stunning visuals of the ocean’s ecosystems.

Obama first announced his role as narrator for the series in September 2024, and he delivered his debut narration just two months later. This marks another milestone in his career, following previous Emmy wins in 2022 and 2023 for his work on Our Great National Parks and Working: What We Do All Day.

Other Notable Nominees and Their Contributions

Sir David Attenborough, the legendary naturalist and broadcaster, was also nominated for his work on Planet Earth: Asia. The BBC series, which took nearly four years to film, explores the diverse wildlife of Asia, from the Gobi Desert to the coral seas of the Indian Ocean. Attenborough, who has won three Emmys and been nominated 12 times since 1985, received recognition for the third episode, “The Frozen North.”

Idris Elba was nominated for his work on Erased: WW2’s Heroes of Color, specifically for its episode on “D-Day.” As an executive producer, Elba helped bring attention to the overlooked contributions of Black soldiers during World War II. He previously earned Emmy nods for his roles in Luther and The Big C.

Tom Hanks, a 18-time Emmy nominee and seven-time winner, was recognized for his narration in The Americas, a documentary series that explores the natural wonders of the continent. Hanks’ work on the Andes episode, the longest mountain range in the world, earned him critical acclaim.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known for her work on Fleabag, was nominated for her role in Octopus!, a series that delves into the mysteries of the octopus. The show, which features comedian Tracy Morgan, premiered on Amazon Prime in May 2025.
