Sigma Enhances Classic Prime with Superior Optics and AF

Introduction to the Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG II Art Lens

Sigma has unveiled a second-generation version of its full-frame 35mm F1.2 ‘Art’ lens, marking a significant step forward in optical and mechanical design. This new iteration, known as the 35mm F1.2 DG II Art, is tailored for Sony E and L mount cameras, promising improved performance while being more compact and lighter than its predecessor.

Optical Advancements

The lens features an advanced optical formula with 17 elements arranged in 13 groups. This includes four aspheric lenses and one SLD (Special Low Dispersion) element, which contribute to enhanced image quality by reducing color fringing and coma. The addition of a floating focus design allows for two focusing groups that move independently, improving both sharpness and overall optical performance.

Enhanced Autofocus Performance

Autofocusing capabilities have been significantly upgraded with the introduction of dual linear autofocus motors. This change from the original’s ring-type ultrasonic design results in faster and more accurate focusing. The minimum focusing distance has also been slightly improved, now at 28cm (11.1″) compared to 30cm (11.8″) in the previous model.

Design Improvements

The new lens is notably smaller and lighter, measuring 20% shorter and 30% lighter than its predecessor. While it is roughly the same length as Sigma’s 35mm F1.4 lens, it still weighs about 100g (3.5oz) more and has a 5mm (0.2″) larger diameter. Additionally, the filter size has been reduced from 82mm to 72mm, potentially offering cost savings for users.

User-Friendly Features

The lens retains its predecessor’s aperture ring, which can be set to either clicked or de-clicked settings, along with an added aperture ring lock switch. It also includes an AF-L button for quick access to focus lock functions.

Availability and Pricing

The Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG II Art will be available starting late September 2025. Its retail price is set at $1,549 USD, reflecting an improvement over the previous model’s MSRP of $1,499.
