Taylor Swift’s Showgirl Shatters Box Office With $30M+ Opening

Taylor Swift’s The Official Release Party of a Showgirl Dominates Box Office

Taylor Swift continues to captivate audiences with her latest theatrical release, The Official Release Party of a Showgirl. This event marks the celebration of her twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, and has proven to be a massive success at the box office. As of Sunday morning, the film is projected to earn $33 million domestically by the end of the weekend. This achievement places it at the top of the domestic box office charts for its only weekend in theaters.

Swift’s performance is nothing short of impressive, as she outperforms last week’s No. 1 film, One Battle After Another, which is expected to earn $10.3 million over three days. Despite this drop, the Leonardo DiCaprio action thriller is still on track to become the highest-grossing movie ever for director Paul Thomas Anderson. The film is projected to reach $100 million worldwide by the end of the weekend, surpassing his previous record of $77.2 million from There Will Be Blood (2007).

This milestone will significantly boost Anderson’s overall box office earnings, bringing his total to $417.7 million across all his films, including Magnolia, Licorice Pizza, Inherent Vice, and The Master. However, the success of One Battle After Another does not overshadow the dominance of The Official Release Party of a Showgirl.

A Struggling Competitor: The Smashing Machine

In contrast to Swift’s triumph, The Smashing Machine, a biopic about Mark Kerr directed by Benny Safdie and starring Dwayne Johnson, is struggling at the box office. It is projected to debut with a 3-day total of just $6 million. This would mark the lowest wide release debut for a film featuring Johnson in the lead role, falling below his previous record of $8.5 million for Faster (2010). Johnson has not had a movie debut under $20 million since 2017, when Baywatch opened with $18.5 million.

While Johnson remains one of the biggest names in Hollywood, his recent theatrical releases have shown inconsistency. Films like Moana 2 were huge successes, but others such as Red One, Jungle Cruise, and Black Adam faced challenges. These movies, which reportedly had budgets of $200 million or more, struggled to attract audiences during their initial runs. Although they found second lives on VOD and streaming platforms, it seems that Johnson’s star power alone may not be enough to draw viewers to theaters without strong intellectual property (IP) backing, such as Moana or Jumanji.

Domestic Box Office Top 5

This weekend saw several new releases hit theaters, including the horror Western Killing Faith and the psychological thriller Bone Lake. However, only two of these films made it into the domestic Top 5. The Official Release Party of a Showgirl and The Smashing Machine dominated the charts, while other titles experienced significant drops.

Gabby’s Dollhouse, a family movie that was previously No. 2, dropped 52% to fall to No. 4. While this is a notable decline, it is not catastrophic. One Battle After Another actually dropped more (53%), but its higher starting position made the drop seem more severe. Meanwhile, The Conjuring: Last Rites, a horror sequel, slipped down just 40%, moving from No. 4 to No. 5.

Two other films, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba The Movie: Infinity Castle and The Strangers: Chapter 2, fell out of the Top 5 after their respective debuts. Demon Slayer dropped from No. 3 to No. 6 with $3.5 million, while The Strangers: Chapter 2 moved from No. 5 to No. 8 with $2.8 million.

Upcoming Releases and Future Projections

With The Official Release Party of a Showgirl not returning for a second weekend, the top spot is now open for competition. The upcoming Disney sci-fi film Tron: Ares is expected to claim the No. 1 position. Although it is a sequel to two cult hits that did not achieve major theatrical success, Tron: Ares is projected to earn $10 million or more to surpass next weekend’s holdover titles and its fellow new release, Roofman. This target is well within reach, especially in a market without the presence of Showgirl.

As the box office landscape shifts, the success of The Official Release Party of a Showgirl highlights the continued influence of Taylor Swift and the power of her brand in the entertainment industry.
