The AI Powerhouse: Why NotebookLM Rules for School, Work, and Play

Google refers to NotebookLM as an “AI research tool and thinking partner,” and it is indeed both, but it’s challenging to capture its full capabilities in just one sentence. TheGemini-poweredA tool can make complicated information easier to understand, explore the intricate aspects of a topic, and deliver everything in a clear manner.a format that suits you best.

Whether you’re utilizing it for your work, studying for schoolfor your own creative projects, NotebookLM serves as an excellent tool to help you organize and maintain focus on the information you have provided to it. To enhance the experience further, your personal data, including uploaded sources or text input, isn’t used to train NotebookLM.

It’s difficult to monitor every single one of themfeatures Google has rolled out to NotebookLM in 2025 alone, but it has evolved into an extremely powerful tool that nearly everyone can find useful.

If you’re just starting with NotebookLM or need a quick review of what it can do, I’ve outlined some of its top features, which I believe make it the best AI tool available. For more information, don’t missHow much does it cost to upgrade each popular chatbot?.

NotebookLM isn’t just Google KeepPacked with AI, and not just a chatbot capable of taking notes. It is both and not. Rather than querying Gemini and having it retrieve answers from the vastness of the internet, NotebookLM will only search the sources you give it. It’s a straightforward idea that seems like one of the most useful applications of AI. And Google didn’t stop there.

Now it can accomplish so much more, and it will reward your exploration to discover what it can do for you. Features such as its remarkableAudio Overviewshave subsequently filtered down intoGeminiitself, enabling their use across a broader range of Google’s applications.

What is NotebookLM?

NotebookLM is a note-taking and research assistant tool powered by Gemini, offering various applications. It begins with the sources you provide it, whether they arewebpage URLs, YouTube videos or audio clips, enabling you to combine various sources into a unified collection and add structure to your disorganized ideas or notes.

The most clear-cut application of NotebookLM is for academic or professional purposes. Imagine this— you’ve attended numerous classes and have taken notes for each one, maybe even recorded some lectures. Going through all of them one by one can eventually lead to a basic grasp of the material, but what if you could make them collaborate?

After uploading your sources, Gemini will start working to generate a comprehensive summary of the content. From that point, you can begin asking Gemini questions regarding specific topics, and information from the sources will be presented in a clear and straightforward manner. This feature might be sufficient for some individuals aiming to maximize their notes, but it’s only the beginning.

Web and mobile applications

NotebookLM has been available for some time on the desktop, featuring a three-part layout with Source, Chat, and Studio panels. The Source and Studio panels can be collapsed, allowing for a full-screen chat interface if desired.

Although the Source and Chat panels are fairly straightforward, the Studio panel is where the real creativity takes place (although some features can also be created directly from the Chat panel). This is where you can maximize your NotebookLM experience.

NotebookLM application: A restricted, yet useful, information transformation assistant

Individuals acquainted with the desktop environment will find themselves comfortable with themobile applications for iOS and Android devicesThe simplified application enables you to toggle between the Source, Chat, and Studio panels using a menu located at the bottom. When you navigate to the view displaying all your notebooks, you will find tabs for Recent, Shared, Title, and Downloaded.

Although not all features are available on the app at the moment, it’s expected that it will eventually match the web version’s complete capabilities.

Audio Overviews

If you missed the initial announcement of NotebookLM, you probably became aware of it when Audio Overviews were introduced. After uploading at least one source, you can choose to create an Audio Overview, which offers an in-depth analysis of the content. These overviews are developed by Gemini and are more than just a brief audio summary of your material — they function as a complete podcast featuring two “hosts” who simplify complex subjects. They are highly effective, frequently engaging in dialogue to deconstruct various topics.

The standard duration of an Audio Overview can change based on the amount of content to review and the intricacy of the subject — although there are likely additional elements involved. During my testing, a brief text resulted in a five-minute audio recording, while two longer and more detailed Google Docs documents I uploaded produced an 18-minute Overview.

If you’re looking for a bit more influence over how long your Audio Summary is, you’re fortunate.Released in a blog post during Google I/OEarlier this month, users now have three choices available: shorter, default, and longer. This is ideal if you’re looking for a concise and compact podcast-style experience or want to delve deeply into a topic with an extended Audio Overview.

You can participate in the discussion

It gets even better. In December, NotebookLM received anew look and new methods for engaging with Audio Overviews. The customize button enables you to direct the conversation to ensure important topics are addressed. Enter your instruction and then create your Audio Summary.

Now, if you’re looking to enhance the interactivity of this feature, you can opt for the Interactive mode, which is currently in beta, to participate in the discussion. The video will start playing, and if you have a specific question about something being said, you can click the join button. Upon doing so, the speakers will stop and recognize your presence, inviting you to share your thoughts or ask questions, after which you’ll receive a response.

I decided to experiment with something new, so I provided the lyrics of a song as the sole reference, and the AI podcast team started analyzing the underlying motivations and emotions within the words. I used the join feature to highlight a detail in the lyrics they hadn’t addressed, and the two of them then explored the significance of my suggestion in relation to the overall text. They subsequently connected the theme to other parts of the content. It was fascinating to observe: They managed the emotional depth of the song very effectively and with care.

Video Overviews

The Video Summaries function began being available to usersin late July, and has Recently grown to more than 80 languagesOut of the three Google accounts I’ve used with NotebookLM, only one of them has Video Overviews available.

A new feature provides an animated visual aid to go along with your Audio Overview. For the time being, Google mentions that Video Overviews will initially be presented as slide shows, indicating that additional formats of these overviews may come in the future.Veo-poweredA video summary might not be an unexpected inclusion in the future.

To try the feature, I selected around 1,600 words from the Odyssey. It took almost 20 minutes for the summary to appear—and even then, it wasn’t fully ready. When I pressed the play button, NotebookLM automatically reverted to “Generating Video Overview… This may take a while,” and it remained stuck long enough for me to delete the entire notebook and begin again. The second attempt also appeared to get stuck, though I might have been too impatient while the summary was being created.

I reduced the word count by 50 percent, and as expected, this greatly accelerated the overview creation, allowing me to view the presentation within five or six minutes.

The latest version of Video Overviews is acceptable, but it doesn’t stand out in any significant way. There will be visual elements, but the one created from the text of the Odyssey was mostly an Audio Overview with slides containing quotes from the original source, and it didn’t really enhance the overall experience much. I don’t think this will remain the case in the future, but right now, the Video Overviews seem more like a minor improvement over the Audio Overviews rather than a distinct offering.

Here is an example of the existing Video Overview format.

Mind Maps

I had heard positive things about the Mind Map feature in NotebookLM, but I wanted to experience it without any prior knowledge, so I conducted a separate test. I used approximately 1,500 words from Homer’s Odyssey as my sole source. I then clicked the Mind Map button, and within seconds, an interactive and categorized overview of the text appeared, allowing me to explore it freely.

Numerous sections that were in disrepair contained subcategories for more detailed exploration, some of which focused on individual lines for analysis. Selecting a category or endpoint on the map will initiate a chat with a pre-filled query.

I decided to explore the line, “now without remedy,” and after clicking, the chat section of NotebookLM reappeared with the pre-filled prompt, “Discuss what these sources say about Now without remedy, in the larger context of [the subsection] Alternative (worse).” The entire line was shown, along with who uttered it, what it was a response to, and any motivations (or other references) for why the line was spoken in the text.

Public and featured notebooks

At first, notebooks were linked exclusively to your account, but Google introducedthe ability to share your notebookShare it with others or make it fully public and accessible through a link. Although this is a minor feature, it creates opportunities for teamwork when you’re working on a notebook with someone else, as you can grant edit or view-only permissions. In the case of view-only access, a teacher could develop a study guide for a specific topic related to an exam or homework task and distribute it to the entire class.

The launch of public and shareable notebooks enabled another feature that Google introduced in July: highlighted notebooks. These are accessible to anyone.featured notebooksoriginate from publications, writers, and scholars who explore a wide range of subjects. The list currently includes just eight notebooks, but additional ones are expected to be added in the future.

Study guides and more

If the range of capabilities offered by Audio Overviews and Mind Maps seems to cover everything a student could want in an ideal study companion, NotebookLM has additional features that will further establish its position as the perfect study buddy.

Study guides

Once you have uploaded a source, you can generate a rapid study guide that automatically produces a document containing a quiz, possible essay questions, a glossary of important terms, and the quiz answers at the end. Additionally, you have the option to transform the study guide into a reference for your notebook.

FAQs

Whether you’re utilizing it for academic purposes or aiming to develop a FAQ section for your website, the NotebookLM button produces a set of likely frequently asked questions derived from your sources.

Timeline

If you’re seeking a step-by-step chronological outline, it’s included by default. Developing a timeline for the Odyssey passage involved listing the key events in bullet points and positioning them according to the time references provided in the text. If an event occurs at an unknown time, it will be positioned at the top of the timeline, with a note indicating this. A list of characters for easy reference is also created beneath the sequence of events.

Briefing document

The overview document is exactly as it implies, providing a brief overview of the main topics and significant events to help someone become informed quickly. This will feature specific quotations from the source along with their location. A summary of the content is also included at the bottom of the document.

Small additions add up

Major features such as Audio Overviews often receive the most attention, but Google has recently introduced a few smaller updates or removed prior limitations that make NotebookLM more available and user-friendly for a broader audience.

NotebookLM was previously limited to individuals 18 years old and above, but Google haschanged this restrictionSo, younger individuals can utilize the tool to assist them in learning and completing schoolwork. Currently, NotebookLM is available for use by anyone aged 13 and above, although certain countries may have different regulations.different age restrictions.

NotebookLM has recently introduced one of its most anticipated features:bulk URL uploads. This seems like a minor and straightforward enhancement, but it is definitely a time-saver, as before you could only add website URLs individually.

How NotebookLM evolved into an essential tool for me

I really appreciated the concept and implementation of NotebookLM during its 1.0 phase, and exploring the new features further enhanced my admiration for it. My testing was mainly for enjoyment and to see what this tool is capable of, but using it when I “needed” it gave me a real sense of how effective it can be, even for basic tasks.

During a product presentation, I followed my usual method of taking notes: opening a Google Doc and jotting down brief ideas about important points, hoping I would understand what I meant when I reviewed them later. I was aware that I would also get an official press release, so I wasn’t overly concerned, but I wanted to try out NotebookLM in an actual scenario where I was using it for real—rather than just experimenting, when almost anything seems impressive if it does what you ask it to.

I chose to start a new notebook and use my rough notes (which initially appeared as a collection of poor haikus) as the sole input, just to observe what would emerge. Not only did NotebookLM complete the missing parts, but the overall summary turned out nearly as good as the press release I got the next day. I was amazed. It felt like magic — NotebookLM transformed some quite confusing text into something not only acceptable, but actually quite remarkable.

Interestingly, I’ve now become a more detailed note-taker, but I’m glad to have something that can come to the rescue when needed.

If you want additional features from NotebookLM, think about upgrading.

Most individuals probably won’t require NotebookLM’s paid version, since the free option is sufficiently powerful. That being said, if you need additional features, you canupgrade for additional features. Upgrading to NotebookLM will include everything from the free version, along with:

  • Five times as many Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, notes, questions, and resources per note.
• Ability to use exclusive features like chat personalization, enhanced sharing options, and detailed notebook insights.
