The Ukraine War Drags On Without End

Key Takeaways and Overview –A senior U.S. representative, Steve Witkoff, has voiced optimism that a peace agreement to conclude the conflict in Ukraine might be achieved by the end of this year.

This hope comes after President Donald Trump’s recent individual discussions with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine.

Nevertheless, major challenges still exist, as the Kremlin is already openly opposing the fundamental idea of European security assurances for Kyiv.

Although President Trump expressed “significant anger” regarding ongoing Russian attacks, he also mentioned that a deal could still be reached. However, Moscow’s opposition to critical matters is causing substantial difficulties.

The Conflict in Ukraine Shows No Signs of Ending…

Donald Trump came back to power, repeatedly vowing to bring about a peace agreement betweenRussia and Ukraine on day one.

Now, he might have to content himself with doing it in the first year.

The U.S. special envoy for peace operations, Steve Witkoff, expressed in a Fox News interview this week that he is optimistic the conflict will conclude by the end of the year.

“We remain optimistic that by the end of this year, and possibly even earlier, we will be able to identify the elements needed to reach a peace agreement,” Witkoff said to Bret Baier of Fox News,as stated by the Kyiv Post.

What is the next step, afterPresident Trump’s individual meetingsWith Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier this month, none of which resulted in a truce?

“I’m meeting with the Ukrainians this week. So I will be meeting with them in New York this week, and that’s a significant message. We communicate with the Russians daily. I believe we might witness a bilateral meeting,” Witkoff stated.

Per Reuters,Oil prices are increasing, partly because of ongoing conflicts, “as traders expect additional U.S. restrictions on Russian oil and Ukrainian strikes against Russian energy facilities that might interfere with supply.”

It appears the peace negotiations are proceeding slowly,” stated Phil Flynn, a senior analyst at the Price Futures Group, according to Reuters. “There might be penalties imposed on Russia if these discussions do not yield positive results.

No Guarantees?

Meanwhile, Al Jazeera is now reporting that Russiais against European security assurances forUkraine, following reports that the United Stateshad departed the Alaska summitwith the notion that Russia was receptive to such assurances.

Speaking with journalists in Moscow on Wednesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that while Moscow appreciated the recent attempts by U.S. President Donald Trump to facilitate a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, he emphasized that Russia would not agree to European military presence in the country as part of security assurances.Kyiv, as that would mean aNATOpresence within its neighbor’s territory – a stance it had previously strongly opposed,” the report stated.

“Very Angry”

Meanwhile, ABC News reportedOn Tuesday, it was reported that Trump is “very angry” with Putin, as Russia has kept carrying out attacks even though there have been efforts to achieve peace.

Every discussion I have with him is a positive one,” Trump stated about Putin on Monday. “But then, unfortunately, a bomb is placed in Kyiv or somewhere else, and that makes me very angry.

Nevertheless, similar to his representative, Trump conveyed hope that the conflict might soon conclude.

I believe we’re going to conclude the war,” Trump said to reporters. “You can’t predict what will occur during a conflict. Unusual events take place in war. The fact that [Putin] visited Alaska, which is part of our nation, I think was a significant message that he wants it to end.

Gaza, Too?

Also, this week, Witkoff, inthe same Fox News interview, noted that he hopes the other multi-year conflict that Trump has been attempting to conclude, Israel’s conflict inGaza, will also come to an end by the end of the year.

“We believe that this will be resolved one way or another, certainly before the end of this year,” the envoy, who primarily handles matters in the Middle East, per Politico.

Witkoff also blamed Hamasfor maintaining the possibility of the agreement.

A deal has been available for the past six or seven weeks that would have freed 10 of the 20 hostages we believe are still alive,” the representative stated. “Hamas was the one who delayed the process, and now they claim to accept the agreement. I believe they’re largely reversing their stance due to the significant pressure the Israelis are applying.
