The weekend begins with an art show in The Woodlands. Memorial Hermann Broadway will present a popular book/film on stage, while Night Court will stage a jukebox musical set in a hospital. There will be live performances by Acute Inflections, Apollo Chamber Players, The Midnight Papers, and numerous mariachi groups. A risingSNLA star will be performing stand-up at the Cullen Performance Hall.

The Woodlands Arts Council hosts the “Lessons in Expression” opening eventThe Woodlands Arts Council is hosting an art exhibition focused on highlighting the work of local art instructors, honoring the creativity that shapes art classrooms. “Lessons in Expression” features 20 teachers whose dedication to creativity influences the lives of many students. As both artists and educators, their sense of purpose, devotion, and enthusiasm demonstrates their role in inspiring future generations through artistic expression. The event runs until Thursday, October 23, at 6 pm.

Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center presents__Life of Pi__Based on the book that has sold over 15 million copies (and was adapted into)an Oscar-winning movie), Life of Piis a remarkable tale of resilience and optimism. Following a maritime disaster, a 16-year-old boy named Pi endures on a lifeboat alongside four companions — a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a Royal Bengal tiger. Presented with stunning visuals, top-notch puppetry, and exceptional stage design,Life of Pioffers an amazing experience that will fill viewers with wonder and happiness. 7:30 pm (2 and 7:30 pm Saturday; 1:30 and 7 pm Sunday).

Night Court presents __Law’s Anatomy__Houston Hope Hospital is the place where legal professionals join medical staff during patient rounds to ensure openness. Night Court’sLaw’s Anatomyshows a humorous day in the lives of Houston’s medical and legal professionals, with music by the Bee Gees, Chappell Roan, and others. The Night Court event supports local legal charities in Houston. Attending lawyers can earn 2.5 hours of Ethics CLE credit. 7:30 pm (7:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays).

Houston Cinema Arts Society and Southwest Alternate Media Project bring you the Houston Media Conference 2025The third annual Houston Media Conference will showcase local and national production companies, equipment rental services, and will feature speakers from the fields of film, television, digital media, law, and finance to address and share insights on the business side of movie production. The Houston Media Conference aims to create an open platform where professionals across all areas of production can connect, network, and interact with representatives from Houston’s film industry. 11 am (9 am on Saturday and Sunday).

Acute Inflections bring Emotional Music to HoustonAcute Inflections, a jazz-infused R&B pair from New York City, is set to perform in Houston this weekend with its distinctive mix of soulful music and humor. This duo presents a style that lovers of Erykah Badu and Billie Holiday appreciate, combining classic soul with a modern flair. During the performance, they will provide free wine and snacks, while ticket sales proceeds go to the Renaissance Youth Center, a South Bronx organization that supports urban youth through music education. 7 pm.

River Oaks Theatre presents __Name of the Game__Amidst the backdrop of Chippendales, male exotic dancing flourished in South Central LA from the late 1980s through the early 2000s, with venues operating throughout the week and performers gaining local fame.Name of the Game, we explore the lives of past and present male dancers (and the women who support them) to uncover the story of Black male exotic dancing in Southern California, and how it connects with the beginnings of hip hop, gang culture, and kung fu assassins. A Q&A with directors and documentary participants will take place after the screening. 7:15 pm.

Apollo Chamber Players presents __With Malice Towards None__Apollo Chamber Players offers a multidisciplinary performance that highlights our common humanity, showcasing art as a positive influence in our divided but continuously advancing nation. The musical pieces include recent commissions from Apollo, such asWith Malice Toward Noneby Black Vietnam veteran composer J. Kimo Williams. Special guests are electric violinist Tracy Silverman, spoken word poet Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton, and members of the Houston Ebony Opera Guild and Houston Chamber Choir. 8 pm.

Asia Society Texas showcases Happy Birthday, Hung Hsien: Honoring a Houston LegendThe Asia Society Texas will honor the 92nd birthday of renowned Houston artist Hung Hsien, whose exhibition “Between Worlds” is currently being showcased. Having resided in Houston since 1984, Hsien is considered one of the most significant yet overlooked figures in the evolution of modern ink painting. Guest curator Dr. Tiffany Wai-Ying Beres and Cornell University professor Dr. An-yi Pan will present introductory talks about Hsien’s life and artistic contributions. This will be followed by a reception featuring cake and various refreshments. 3 p.m.

Cactus Music features The Midnight Papers Live Performance and Book SigningThe Midnight Papers is a garage rock duo consisting of Tiffany Hamilton on guitar and vocals, and Tim Richey on drums and vocals, hailing from Houston. They draw inspiration from proto-punk and new wave. Their music features a mix of gritty, distorted guitar sounds, strong drumming, and melodic female lead vocals. Their style has elements reminiscent of the Pretenders, The Kills, and Patti Smith. They will perform an in-store show at Cactus Music this weekend, followed by a signing for their newly released self-titled debut album. 3 pm.

The Art Museum of Houston showcases__ Hook__Catch hold of your joyful memories and soar to Neverland in Steven Spielberg’s 1991 fantasy.Hook, featuring an amazing cast headed by the late, remarkable Robin Williams as overworked lawyer Peter Banning. Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) calls upon Peter to come back to Neverland after his children are taken. With assistance from Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts) and the Lost Boys, Peter discovers his inner Pan to rescue his children and free the child within us all. Albert Rodriguez, administrative and production coordinator at MFAH Films, will introduce the movie. 5 pm.

Cullen Performance Hall features Marcello HernándezMarcello Hernandez is returning to H-Town for a stand-up show at the Cullen Performance Hall. TheSaturday Night LiveCastmate has been enjoying a wonderful year. The man performeda Latin loverso excellently during the 50th season, he reinterpreted the roleat a Sabrina Carpenter concert. He is also returning to his Miami hometown next month to film his first Netflix special. 7 pm.

Yogurtland showcases “A Very Laufey Day”Yogurtland is once again partnering with Grammy-award-winning jazz artist Laufey for a temporary collaboration, coinciding with the launch of her latest album.A Matter of Time. Mariachi FestivalThe 2025 Mariachi Festival, which honors Hispanic culture through a range of mariachi and ballet folklorico performances spanning three days, can be experienced until Sunday. Notable groups performing include Mariachi Imperial de America, Mexico en Danzas Grupo Folklórico, UH Mariachi Pumas, Mariachi 7 Leguas, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Ballet Folklorico, Mariachi Mariposas, Ballet Folklórico South Texas College, and others. The event starts at 2 p.m.

Craft Pita __Alex vs. America__ Anniversary DinnerIn celebration of the one-year milestone ofchef Rafael Nasr’s Alex vs. America appearance, Craft Pita’s Buffalo Speedway location will offer a special dinner showcasing the dishes from the episode. Nasr will present both the Lebanese bolognese pasta with a lamb foundation, and the grilled shrimp fattoush salad, which includes grilled shrimp marinated in preserved lemon, vinaigrette dressing, fried pita bread, and pomegranate seeds.
