President Trump has expressed his opinion on New York Governor Kathy Hochul’sendorsement of Zohran Mamdaniin the mayoral election in New York City.
Hochul announced her support while Mamdani remains ahead in the polls.A recent CBS News New York survey indicates Mamdani leading by 15 pointsin the mayoral election. Hochul’s support could have significant consequences.
Mamadani was in the Bronx on Monday, greeting striking workers while enjoying an unexpected endorsement from a moderate Democrat, who, despite having differences on various matters, has chosen her as his top pick to lead the city.
“I’m thrilled to have Governor Hochul join our cause, and to demonstrate the collaboration between City Hall and Albany in the effort to make the most expensive city in the United States more affordable,” Mamdani stated.
Hochul defended her decision.
“I believe what pushed me over the edge was the conversation regarding Donald Trump inserting himself into our local election, attempting to influence the outcome, and possibly clearing the way for his preferred candidate. That was very unsettling and alarming to me,” Hochul stated.
How did this occur?
Posting on social media, Mr. Trump once more labeled Mamdani, a democratic socialist and the Democratic candidate, as a “Communist.”
He described Hochul’s support for Mamdani as “a rather surprising event, and a very poor choice for New York City. How could this occur? Washington will be observing this matter very carefully. There’s no need to keep investing good money into a bad situation!”
It was not immediately apparent which federal funds the president was mentioning.
Hochul declared her support for the Queens assembly member ina New York Times editorial opinion piece Sunday night.
She stated on Monday that they do not agree on everything.
I’ve clearly stated that we have our differences, but I still think he offers a sense of optimism and a can-do attitude,” Hochul said. “A positive outlook that I believe our city requires right now. And we all understand that there’s a significant amount of work done at the state government level once the budget is set and our priorities are revealed, and I intend to keep focusing on affordability and public safety.
NYC mayoral candidates react
Adams was upset about Hochul’s support for Mamdani.
There are 8.5 million residents of New York. The governor holds one vote. Let’s make that clear,” Adams stated.
Republicans were clearly delighted. Sliwa referred to Hochul’s endorsement as a “huge U-turn,” stating she “crumbled like a cheap camera and has aligned with the Zohranistas.”
Sliwa stated he was committed to staying in the competition.
“I’ll be competing until the very end,” Sliwa added.
An probable opponent to Hochul in next year’s gubernatorial contest seized the endorsement.
Well, Kathy Hochul is the worst governor in the country, and it was just a matter of time before she submitted to this extreme anti-Semitic communist. The truth is, Kathy Hochul supports Zohran Mamdani’s stance on defunding the police, eliminating our law enforcement, and ending prisons,Rep. Elise Stefanik said. “It is outrageous.”
CBS News in New York has contacted Cuomo for a reaction to Hochul’s support. We have not received a reply yet.
Hochul’s support is important and could assist Mamdani in gaining the approval of other prominent Democrats who have been hesitant to express their backing, including Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.
Political analysts are puzzled, forecasting that Hochul’s endorsement could negatively impact her bid for re-election.
Why would you do this? You barely won your last election by 300,000 votes. You lost 52 of 62 counties,” said political analyst JC Polanco. “Why would you do this and damage your prospects with the suburbs near New York City? The only explanation is the fear that the Democratic Socialists of America are more popular than ever, will skip this election, and might not back her in a re-election.
In her opinion piece, Hochul mentioned that she and Mamdani “don’t agree on everything,” noting that they might “disagree openly and debate strongly.”
Over the past few months, I’ve had open discussions with him. We’ve experienced our differences. However, during our talks, I heard a leader who aligns with my dedication to a New York where children can grow up secure in their communities and where opportunities are accessible to all families. I heard a leader who is determined to make New York City more affordable — a objective I strongly endorse,” Hochul wrote.
Hochul stated that Mamdani’s emphasis on affordability is the “top priority” she agrees with him on.
Hochul stated that she encouraged Mamdani “to ensure there is effective leadership at the top of the NYPD” and also discussed with him “the importance of addressing the increase in antisemitism without hesitation.”
The former involvement of Mr. Trump in the New York City mayoral race
It’s not the first time Mr. Trump has commented on the four-way mayoral contest. He had previously statedhe would prefer a direct election between the two candidates.
Sources informed CBS News New YorkThe administration of Trump has been considering various employment opportunities.to create a head-to-head matchup between Mamdani and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, involving both the current Mayor Eric Adams and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
Steve Witkoff, a senior advisor to the president, had a meeting with Adams during a recent trip to Florida.
Last week, Mr. Trump commented on Sliwa, saying he is “not quite top-tier,” and had concerns about his dedication to cats.
He wants cats to reside in Gracie Mansion … the impressive residence of the mayor. It’s stunning. To me, Gracie Mansion is like a legendary location if you’re in New York,” Mr. Trump stated. “Now, we don’t need to have thousands of cats.
Cuomo has not replied to the Trump administration’s attempts to arrange a one-on-one debate with Mamdani, but he has referred to Adams as a “disruptor” in the race, and stated that if he were in a direct contest against Mamdani, he would emerge victorious.
